question about sweets

I'm a diabetic, and rarely eat sugars of any kind. I used to take injections and oral meds but since going low carb I don't have to anymore. I avoid sugar, fruit juice, maple products, agave, honey, molasses, brown rice syrup, dates, other dried fruit etc. I eat whole fruit on occasion, and only in season, maybe once every couple of weeeks. All caloric sweeteners raise my blood sugar too high.

Until recently, I have been using artificial sweeteners maybe once a day. I would eat an artificially sweetened yogurt, or make cocoa, or chai. These were my desserts, my chocolate fix, and the way I joined in with the rest of the family when there were treats to be had.

But now there is a lot in the news about artificial sweeteners causing sluggish metabolism and weight gain. I already knew they were bad for you, but I felt like they weren't as bad for *me* as sugars. But now it looks like maybe they are as bad. What's really frustrating is that in reading how this works, I think it would be the case with all non-caloric sweeteners, including stevia. It's the brain recognizing the lack of calories and slowing things down.

So I've been eating essentially nothing sweet at all, and it's lame, lol. I'm sad that in the winter, when there is little in-season fruit, I won't be eating anything sweet at all.

I've given up a lot in order to avoid medication and it's been worth it. I've lost some weight and I feel pretty good (even better since I quit the artificial stuff) but I'm not sure it's a good tradeoff if I NEVER get to eat anything sweet again.

Does anyone have info on how stevia might have a different or better effect on metabolism? Or any other non caloric sweetener?

Does anyone else just not eat anything that tastes sweet at all?

Yes, I was going to recommend Stevia. Everything that I've read about it says its safe since its an herb that has been around for so long. And I've read that most of the time its fine for diabetics too. Radiant Life http://www.radiantlifecatalog.com/ sells the green herb for it, and other Stevia products.

How about Erythritol or Coconut Palm Sugar?

Erythritol is a non calorie sweetener and Coconut Palm Sugar has a very low GI score of 35.
