Sore hips from sleeping!!

Is anyone else experiencing this? I wake up from sleeping with sore hips. When I lay on my side, the hip that is down feels almost bruised. After getting up in the morning, the soreness lasts for at least a few hours. I have a tempurpedic mattress, which should be soft enough. What should I do????

Oh yeah, this is my favorite part of pregnancy (insert sarcasm here).

My hips did this last pregnancy and have begun doing it this time around. There really isn't anything I can tell you do except sleep with a large pillow between your legs and switch sides often. Sometimes, when the pain is bad, I lay on my back for about 20 minutes or so to calm the aching, but other than that, I slept on our futon which was much harder than our bed and seemed to help some. I have personally found that softer mattresses cause more pain.

20 weeks and beginning to have this issue. We have a stupid-hard mattress. It helps me to have a pillow behind my back, another under my belly, and one between my legs. The belly pillow seems to be the most important, for me. Arrrgghhh, pregnancy! I want a new bed!

I have this issue as well, and I don't remember it with my last pregnancy. I do have a latex mattress this time, which is very soft. I probably flip side to side every 1-2 hours, when my hip starts aching. But once I'm up in the morning, it doesn't hurt any more. I figured it had something to do with my hips expanding. Weird.

I had awful hip pain with my first pregnancy. I have it very minimally this time around and I attribute that to regular visits to the chiropractor!

Yeah, the chiro saves me during pregnancy. My right hip regularly gets out of whack, making one leg shorter than the other and really painful. It's all the relaxin in our systems!

I would suggest more pillow support for you. I ***love*** my Snoogle body pillow, and then use 2-3 pillows in addition to wedge myself in. Also, don't be afraid to sleep on your back, particularly if you have a pillow under one hip or the other - your body WILL tell you if that position becomes an issue - you'll feel sick or light-headed and then you'll move. I checked with my midwife about this, because I HATE being confined to my sides, I get so sore and she confirmed that back-sleeping is not a problem, especially if you do the pillow-under-one-hip trick and listen to your body.

I've found that hip stretches right before bed have cut down on a lot of the soreness I was having. Hold onto a chair or your bed, and cross one ankle onto the opposite knee. Then "sit" back until you feel a deep stretch in the leg that is crossed. Hold for a few seconds and repeat on the opposite side. Sometimes I will do these in the middle of the night if I have to get up for a potty stop, and I do them first thing in the morning if I do wake up sore. A pillow between my knees helps, too!

: except the harder mattresses make me even more uncomfortable. I've slept semi-sitting (like propped up with pillows) on the couch when pregnant, though.

Yep. I discovered last night that a pillow between my legs (like where my knees are) - cures that problem!

Everything Keeta said i was going to say down to the right hip getting out of whack (weird!) I do the snoogle with two other pillows one for my head and one for my belly it is so soft and cozy I love love my snoogle it is a life saver I also just started to have a odd way of using the snoogle to raise my one hip and that has helped with the hip pain A LOT but I think it just comes along with the other joys and comfort of pregnancy

Do I??? Understatement of the past say oooh 4 months or so (I'm just over 7 months along now). I sleep with a pillow between my knees, one under the belly slightly and one behind my back and one under my top arm (to keep my shoulders open). It makes rolling over and repositioning rather entertaining for my DH to watch me do The chiropractor adjusts my hips on a regular basis (1 / wk or 1 / biwkly) + we just splurged on a new bed - Tempur Pedic - which is AMAZING and as soon as it's done airing out I'm sure will be a major help.

I've slept on every surface in the house and found the softer the better. All in all I've heard it's just going to be there until after the birth. Your hips and pelvis start loosening up for that baby and won't go back to normal until your hormones tell them to

Yep, here too. DH slept in the spare room most of 3rd trimester last time because I tossed and turned so much. Looks like it's going to be even worse this time. Ugh.

Pillows, exercise, etc, all help. But not enough! I also ended up sleeping on the couch semi-upright for most of my 9th month last time. FUN.

Me, too! Except a Papasan chair with lots of pillows and an ottoman, entire third trimester. Did most of my laboring there, too!

Okay - whew, I'm not alone then!! I'm going to check into chiropractic care...never been to one before - but i'm willing to try anything at this point! And I will look into the snoogle body pillow (love the name - cracks me up!). I'm very excited to try sleeping on my back with one hip raised. I hadn't considered this before....could be a quick remedy while I wait for the others!

Well, I have been going to the chiropractor and it doesn't help this hip soreness we're talking about. I told him about it and he just said it just had to do with the relaxin and everything being so loose in that area right now. My Comfort-U pillow seems to help, but the soreness is still there a little.

Ugh, sounds normal. I'm only 16 weeks but my right hip/pelvis is sore constantly (just like last time), and he hip pain is right around the corner. For me, it got WORSE after I had DS, and didn't go away for about four months. Crikes.

Sore Hips

I have started having this on occasion, too, especially after a particularly active day. Other than flipping sides and using a body pillow, on nights with hip pain, I lay extra pillows out flat underneath me all the way down my body length and that seems to help. I guess it's the extra layer of cushioning. Sometimes our couch is the answer, too, as it's pretty cozy...

I have two body pillows, place them side by side, and sleep on my side sort of on top of them where they meet. I also have one or two pillows between my knees.

Until I started doing this I had horrible hip pain, but with this arrangement I feel pretty normal.

Get recommendations! Preferably from women who have been pregnant. Chiropractors vary wildly. I was saved from horrible horrible hip and low back pain when I asked around at a prenatal yoga class for chiro recommendations.

On the other hand, I've been to chiropractors who helped not at all.

Edited to add: The practitioner who helped me also taught me how to pull up with my deep pelvic muscles when walking (not the same as kegels) - this really, really helped keep everything in alignment.
