How do I move our milk?

First - I'm new here - Hello to all!

We are moving from Houston to Plano and we've got about 600oz frozen. The fridge will be unplugged on Tuesday and won't be replugged until Thursday so i can't use the freezer until Thursday night possibly Friday morning.

How can I move and store it without it going bad?

HELP!

No personal experience, but dry ice?? You probably would need to replace in a couple times over that long.
I know i have had seafood shipped in dry ice from Alaska but its overnighted.
wow 600oz!! is that for real?

good idea - the dry ice would probably dissipate and I would be left with spoiled milk so I would need to replace it - i wonder how often... going to look that up!

I thought I was going back to work so in the beginning I pumped like crazy trying to make sure my son had enough milk for day care... now I'm just keeping it so I can use it when he starts a sippy cup or when I'm out of town etc.

large coolers and lots of dry ice-but that could get really pricey-is there anyone in plano that you can ship it to and have them store it for a few days for you?

Good for you and Baby!

You're going to need some coolers! More than you think. I would do it one of two ways:
1) pack according to shipping instructions on milkshare.org (.com?) Use lots of cardboard and add dry ice every 12 hours or so. It works GREAT.
2) pack it up per Milkshare instructions the weekend before and drop it off somewhere (with a family member?) and then pick it up once your freezer is set up and cooled back down, that way you don't have to stress about it.

I have a 5 cu. ft. deep freezer in P-ville (78660, outside of Austin) if it can be of any service to you during your move. I just went through the same situation moving from FL to TX, but mine didn't go well... but that's another thread! PM me if I can be of any help.

ok, so what if I do this...

I buy a deep freezer - maybe a 5 cu ft maybe a 14 cu ft [as that is SO on sale]

I pack some dry ice in there and some newspaper and plug it in as soon as we get there

so it's not really out of commission for a few days but just for about 5/6 hours BUT with the dry ice

do you think that would work?

i traveled around the country for a couple months, and used dry ice. if you get a big enough chunk, and keep it well wrapped, and the cooler closed, it should last 2 days. it evaporates (sublimates, actually) faster when more exposed to air, so be careful about getting single larger pieces.

they usually sell dry ice in slabs about a foot square by 1 to 2", wrapped in butcher paper. they usually cost $10-$20 per chunk, sold by weight. i've found it sometimes sold in gas stations, or look in the yellow pages (google --> http://dryicedirectory.com/ --> 11 sellers just in the 713 area code). get yourself a big size cooler and 2 or 3 slabs, and you should be rock solid for 2 -3 days.

ETA sounds good. just err on the side of too much. the bigger the air space, the faster it sublimates.

I think this would work well, as long as you pack LOTS of cardboard/newspaper in it and keep it out of the sun. Don't seal it because the gas created when the dry ice evaporates will expand and it needs to be able to escape. Cardboard/newspaper is a great natural insulator, so whatever isn't filled with milk I would fill with cardboard.
