Where do you get these things? I see places to order online but is there somewhere we could get them in person? Thanks! Oh and how many should I get? I bled a lot after I had my son.

You can get them at any drug store. They are called "under pads" and are with the Depends.

I am trying to remember how many comes in the homebirth kit from my midwife, I want to say there are like 5-7 large size, and 10-15 smaller sized ones. Really you don't use them too much until the birth, and then you might trade one or 2 out depending on what is happening. But for me, I always have a ton leftover, and they are WONDERFUL for afterward to lie on in case of leaks! Also, your midwife will probably use them while checking for tears too. Are you having a midwife attended homebirth? Doesn't she suggest a number or offer a birthkit?

Oh, that's why I was confused! At the store we were always looking for "Chux pads". We saw "underpads" but weren't sure if they were the same thing.

Yes - I'm planning a midwife attended home birth. We ordered her birth kit but chux pads were on the list of what we had to get ourselves. I'll have to double check and see if she put how many to get... I don't think she did though.

Thanks!

get the largest pads size wise because the smaller pads don't cover as well so then we end up double and triple covering and use up more pads that way.

And any that are left over make great diaper changing pads.

also, consider checking out pet section or stores. There are also puppy pads (for housebreaking) that are basically the same thing and some people find they are much cheaper.

this is what we used for our last birth and still have leftover for the next one.

Really??? A pack of 10 of the large ones are only $8 at Cascade. And the medium's are only $3.50 for 10. If it were me, I'd probably buy one of each of those and be done with it for $11.50. We bought a few of those boxes for our puppy just a few months ago and I thought they were expensive!! And they were small too.

I've never heard of Cascade. Hopefully we'll find as good a deal though.

Thanks. Well we did find a good deal at our local grocery store. 18 extra large size for $6.99!!! My midwife's list said to get 3 packages of the large size underpads. We ended up just getting one package, though, because my husband pointed out that if I really needed more, we could just get more later.

most of them we use during labor and birth and almost none afterward- I would say have 2 packages on hand minimum - say you have leaking water through hours of labor - you put a chux under you to keep your bed, chair, couch clean and dry- or over a birth ball then during pushing and birth many can get used up quickly and then right after until the placenta is out and even after that a bit so you don't have to jump up and get dressed asap you can take your time and bond/catch your breath...

I've gotta say that your midwife probably knows better what supplies are needed for a home birth than your husband does. As a midwife, I would be really irritated. The items and amounts on my supply list weren't put there willy nilly. It's much easier to take back unused packages to the store than to run out in labor or just after the baby is born. Of course, it's your mattress and furnishings that are going to be ruined if your husband is wrong.

You're right...of course she would know better. I didn't mean to imply that my husband thinks he knows better or that I think he does. I do think he's right that if we need more we can get more later. I won't be the one running out to get them and our grocery store isn't far away from us at all. He cares what my midwife thinks and I don't want to give the impression that he doesn't. Last night he asked her if we should get another bed cover, since we have two beds pulled up together. She said we could if we wanted but I only need to give birth on one bed. But if we wanted to be sure we could get another. Then she joked that if we got two, I might give birth on the couch.

I guess I was thinking that someone above said that their pack of large chux pads only had 5-7 and a smaller pack had 10-15 smaller. This one had 18 large ones and my midwife never put a number besides "3 packs of the large size". So, I guess I was thinking that that one package might account for 2.

Of course, I could always ask her to give me exact numbers (and I will ask her. ) I WAS wondering if we should get more!
