Flu Spray Vaccine for Kids

Thread Starter
I have a question. I have looked, but am impatient...and wonder if anyone has advice about my Flu Spray vax situation.

My DSD is due to arrive Thurs. evening (she'll be with us for a month) But her mom called today and said she is getting her the Nasal Spray Flu Vax today. (She knows we do not vax.) Now, my kids have never had the flu or any vaccines and I have an 8 month old. I know it is made with a live flu-strain, so can any of us possibly get the flu from her? Her reasoning for getting it is that they travel so much and it is preservative free so she feels better getting it.

I'm just nervous. All our kids are so healthy. My step-daughter is very healthy too, never had the flu before...

My kids eat good and take their vitamins and I had them on pro-biotics...kinda pricey for us at the moment, but I think I will start them up again before Thursday.

Any thoughts? Thanks...and I am not upset at her...it's her daughter (DH is mad...but probably won't say anything) I just want my kids to be protected and since she hasn't seen her lil sister she may be hugging and kissing her, etc.

How tough. It's live. It can definitely spread. Good luck!

Yup to the bolded. This vaccine sheds for up to 3 weeks for an average of 8 days. I just posted about this in the pregnancy swine flu thread. Tough call.
Since she is 8 why not suggest to the mom she get a thimerosol free shot instead? It's dead and will not shed.

My husband got Flumist a couple weeks ago and no one else in our house got a full blown case of the flu from it. A few of us had super mild flu symptoms right after he got it and I'm not sure if it was related or not. I have a 20 month old unvaxed baby and my other 5 kids range from mostly vaxed down to only having 1 vax. None of them has ever had a flu vax. I know the vax sheds but it is weakened so I'm curious if it has caused full blown flu symptoms in anyone that's been exposed to it. My dh is going to get the swine flu mist in the next couple weeks. I hope no one here catches that one from him getting the mist.

I don't do probiotics but I've been making sure my kids take a good multivitamin and extra Vitamin D.

I was told that it is extremely rare for someone to catch it since it is an attenuated (weakened) virus, and then I read that there is an approximate 2.4% risk of them transmitting it to someone. Yes, they can shed the virus for up to 3 weeks but my understanding is that it would not be of concern unless they were around someone with an extremely suppressed immune system ie recent bone marrow transplant. My ds got it and I am pregnant and I did not catch it from him. Neither did his immunosuppressed great grandfather.

Does anyone have a link to an article stating that the live flu mist that they are giving out can cause illness (ie, "shed") to others? I used this as an argument against getting the spray recently at work and need to back up my claim, but can't find anything.

Here is the Mediummune product information sheet (see section 14.5): http://www.medimmune.com/pdf/products/flumist_pi.pdf

It discusses the 2.4% figure mentioned by a PP.

(I just wonder how anyone would know in the real world, rather than in a controlled study, whether it was a flu mist transmission versus a wild transmission--a regular nasal swab probably wouldn't be able to tell that.)

risks of flumist

It was in their original package insert years ago and they just happen to leave it out now

In the section of the FluMist package insert labeled "PRECAUTIONS," the manufacturer states the following warning:

"FluMist® recipients should avoid close contact with immunocompromised individuals for at least 21 days.""

this was when it first came out in 2003

Risks of FluMist Vaccine
An Investigation By Dr. Sherri Tenpenny

"One of the most troubling concerns over the injection of this "chemical soup" is the potential for the viruses to enter directly into the brain"

Each dose ALSO has monosodium glutamate MSG, hydrolyzed
porcine gelatin, arginine, sucrose, dibasic potassium
phosphate, monosodium phosphate, and gentamicin sulfate.

DH showed me an email that is circulating at his work stating that we all need to be extra careful about this swine flu vaccine because it could most likely contain an ingredient called squalene, that has been shown to cause infertility in (i forget which animal) and that has a host of all kinds of harmful effects. Does anyone know anything about this adjuvent?

Squalene is being used in Canada. NOT in the US. Yet.

And yes, this adjuvant is questionable, for sure. Here is a link to watch if you are interested:
