Ways to Increase Milk Supply

I haven't had DD3 yet, but I am scheduled to have my c-section next Thursday. I've historically had issues with my milk supply.

With DD1, I was induced for an emergency delivery due to pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. I didn't see her until she was three days old and the hospital refused to let me pump in the mean time because of my health. By the time I could pump and attempt to have her latch on, it just didn't really work, even with the aid of a lactation consultant.

With DD2, I breastfed her immediately after the c-section. She was such a pro with it, even the first time. (Her first time lasted 45 minutes! The OB and nurses were amazed.) I just couldn't make enough milk for her and was forced to supplement with formula. When she was around four to five months old, my supply just basically left on it's own. I'm not sure what happened.

With this baby, I'd love to be able to make enough so that I can exclusively breastfeed her. With her being born in October, I want to make sure she has the best chance of not getting sick possible. Plus, I've really been reading up on "virgin gut" and everythig too. I'm also more determined to exclusively breastfeed this time as well. I'm willing to do anything to make it work.

I did try Fenugreek when I was breastfeeding DD2. It caused her to break out in horrible rashes. My pediatrician advised us to stay away from the herb with future children and her.

Which supplements have helped you increase your milk supply?

I've used Blessed Thistle, but I don't know how well that would work without the Fenugreek too... there's also Goat's Rue... Oatmeal (not an herb, I know, but it REALLY helped me when I was having to pump for my dd in the NICU) There are some tinctures as well, but I think they might contain Fenugreek... There is a sticky at the top of the breastfeeding challenges forum that has all kinds of info on upping your low supply, you might try that.

Also, if you have to supplement, I reccommend getting an at-the-breast supplementer.. like the Lact-Aide or the SNS so that the baby will stimulate your body to produce milk while she/he is getting the supplement. Good luck!!

Yay for you for really getting started this early so you can do the best possible job. I hope your birth goes very easy and breastfeeding is super successful.

Personally, I've always made a lot of milk, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt, cause I've never had too much of an issue with milk production.

1. More Milk Plus drops/pills by Motherlove helped me super fast when I was pumping for my twins. I wonder if there is a version without fenugreek? Or maybe since it isn't purely fenugreek if it would be gentler to the baby?

2. Eating Quaker High Fiber Oatmeal at night does the trick for me with my current baby.

3. Another person said this worked well and the amazon reviews say its pretty good. I've got it saved just in case... (also has fenugreek though)

I had great success with Goat's rue from motherlove. Also conscious relaxation of my breast, arms, and abs because I have problems with stress and letdown.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I'll most definitely have to research your suggestions and find them before DD3 makes her grand appearance!

Read the low supply stickie at the top of the BF challenges forum, it has lots of good ideas.

Eating oatmeal, using pure maple syrup and mother's milk tea are all really good ways to increase your supply. I have had many moms tell me that their supply increased in 2-3 days when eating oatmeal.

Good luck!!!

Take care!
