"You'll be wishing you had the vax when you get the flu"

I had a customer the other day who mentioned swine flu and I said I wasn't getting the vax because I felt the risks of the vaccine outweigh the risks of the disease in my situation. Then she said, "You'll be wishing you had the vaccine when you get the flu." Instead of rolling my eyes, I just laughed and said, "When I was in transition during labour I thought, "Now I see why women get epidurals," but I never regretted that."

Some people. Seriously, no, I WON'T be wishing I'd put chemicals in my body. I'll be wishing I didn't get the flu at all, but not that I put chemicals in my body instead.

That's funny since she obviously wasn't sepaking from experience.

In fact most people on here and IRL that I have spoken to that have had this flu have said it hasn't been all that bad and they have had worse flus in their life.

Um, yeah the flu was so "bad" in my case that I was over it for 3 days before I realized that's what I'd had. Seriously, I had a fever of 102 for a day (which is extremely uncommon for me and *only* happens with the flu) and felt crummy for an additional 2 days - but still very functional except for that one day. The pain at the injection site of a shot lasts longer than that stuff did! I can honestly say that was the best flu I ever had! LOL! (*Disclaimer: admittedly not everyone will have the flu as mild as I did, this is just my personal experience with it)

That makes me wonder. I haven't gotten the flu vax since I was a kid (IF even then) and the last experience with it I remember was when I was about 15. I think we just assumed it was the flu - I never went to the doctor. But now I wonder if I HAVE had it since and had never noticed because it was so mild. Who knows.

"When you get the vaccine and get the flu you'll be wishing you'd had neither!"

She might be right. I was wishing I had gotten the flu shot last year when I got the flu.....until I watched the news and saw that it didn't even match the strain going around and then soon after I realized that it was probably the swine flu. I thought I was going to die...and I kept wondering when I would need to call an ambulance. It hurt that bad and it lasted for 2 weeks with teases of getting better every other day and then waking up feeling just as bad as 2 days before. My husband got it as bad as I did. My 8yo son had it for 2 days...2 days!

So, yeah, like the epidural, you'll be wishing you could have prevented the pain of the flu if you get it, but afterwards, you'll be glad you didn't.

I imagine if you get the Guilian Barr Syndrome, you'll be wishing you'd taken your chances on the disease...and if you still get the flu after having the flu shot, you'd be wishing that you'd gotten the right strain in your flu shot. When I stub my toe on something, I wish I'd looked where I was going.LOL

And you can't wish you didn't get the vaccine once you're dead!

I had the H1N1 flu during this pregnancy and really wished there had been a vaccine for me to get. I was very sick for one week, and out of commission for more than three. It remains to be seen whether my several days of high fevers (which didn't come down even with treatment) hurt the baby. The coughing also kicked off stress incontinence, which probably would have happened anyway, but made me that much more uncomfortable.

yes but the same could be said about a totally untested experiemtal vaccine and it's effects on your baby.

It's just one of those things where it's hard to know what the other choice would have brought.

You might choose the vax, and enjoy freedom from the flu with no short term or long term consequences. Or the vaccine might cause short term or long term consequences for your body, and you also might get the "flu" anyway (they say it's not the flu, but many people - like me - get all the same symptoms of the flu after the shot).

You might not vax, and not get the flu. Or you could get a mild case. Or you could get an awful case.

Personally, I choose no vaccine because I'd rather take my chances on the flu (which people are saying is mild anyway) than on an untested vaccine that has quite a few potential issues. If I were on my deathbed with H1N1 I can't promise I wouldn't be kicking myself, but I seriously doubt it will come to that.

I got the flu really bad once and it put me in ICU because of my asthma. (probably more due to the fact that they gave me a stupid anti-viral).

Never once did I think about wishing I had a flu vax. I've never had a flu shot and I will never get a flu shot.

I wish I never took that anti-viral pill and I will never take an anti-viral ever again!

I wished (still do) I never got the flu shot 3 months after when I "got" MS. Would take the flu for a week than a lifetime of sickness.

it isn't untested or experimental.

The vaccine was fast-tracked and has bypassed much of the testing that other vaccines undergo.

Time constraints mean that clinical data at the time when pandemic vaccines are first administered will inevitably be limited. Further testing of safety and effectiveness will need to take place after administration of the vaccine has begun.

For these reasons, WHO advises all countries administering pandemic vaccines to conduct intensive monitoring for safety and efficacy, and many countries have plans in place for doing so. On the positive side, mass vaccination campaigns can generate significant safety data within a few weeks.
Basically, you get to be a guinea pig for them, for free.
