DR Monthly Cash Flow Questions

Okay, so I feel really stupid trying to do this. I was just going to fill in a few of the things I *knew* needed to be paid before DH gets home for us to figure the rest out together, but now I'm confused.

This may have been answered in weeks one and two of the class, which we missed because the fates conspire against us being financially responsbile. So, from what I understand, we're supposed to be building our mini emergency fund (baby step #1). We're also supposed to spend every penny of our income on paper before we spend it.

My problem is that we (I) made a real mess of things by being lazy over the last two months and there is NO WAY we can put anything in savings for the next month or two unless we have unexpected income (possible, because I'm a midwife) or we don't pay some of our other bills. I really hesitate to not pay bills because that's what got us in this mess in the first place (right now I'm having to pay two electric bills this month, catch up on school tuition by paying last month's and this months, paying our dental insurance twice because I didn't realize it wasn't being auto-drafted, etc). Should these things get put on the back burner in order to fund our mini-emergency fund or can I get caught up on this stuff and THEN fund the emergency fund (which will be much easier to fund when I'm not paying three or four bills twice in each month)??

Yes, definitely.

Correct. Get current on your bills, and look for ways to cut corners in order to try and work ahead on that BEF a bit. Have a garage sale, sell stuff on ebay, etc.

At the very least, I would track every penny you spend so you can see exactly where your money is going every month.

OK, that makes so much more sense to me than not paying stuff in order to save. I know after a month or two it'll be much easier to find space in the budget to fund the EF.

We've been tracking for about two months now. Its depressing, but at least I feel equipped to say how much we need in the various budget categories, which is usually very a overwhelming concept for me.
