Anyone made/used homemade gCloth inserts for overnights?

Now that my almost 4mo ds is out of his Thirsties sz S covers and into the Duo sz 2s, I only have 3 covers plus 2 gDiapers/nylon liners. I've been putting him in cloth during the day here at home, which is most days, but still using sposies for trips and especially for overnights. I'd like to go almost all cloth, but I'm not sure how unless I make some really absorbent cloth inserts for his gDiapers and use those at night.

I have a lot of materials on hand to recycle, and no $$ in the budget for buying more, so if I can make these out of what I already have it would be great. Here's what I have that I could use:

-- half a dozen fluffy, well-loved egyptian cotton bath towels (no softener residue, we don't use it)
-- a couple of old queen-sized flannel sheets that don't fit any of our beds since we upgraded sizes (same...no softener)
-- lots of jersey knit from old Tshirts, all cotton
-- some store-bought flannel in random colors/thicknesses

So, the big question. If I used these to make homemade gCloth inserts, what should I use and how many layers of each? And would it make sense to make thinner inserts with fewer layers and plan to use 2 (or even 3 for the longest stretch) per night-time diaper change, so that they would wash/dry easier? Any other ideas that I might be missing???

Thanks in advance!!
