Hi everyone, I posted a few days ago about my 12 week ds who was having green poops and eating a lot. I think his growth spurt is nearing its end but the green poop continues. But his symptoms are getting worse... he appears to be in a LOT of discomfort when he passes gas/poop. he woke himself up in the middle of the night moaning, crying and kicking his little legs. For about 10 minutes he was withering around and passed gas/poop 4 times.

He's also very fussy when eating and last night was crying as he was feeding. He usually loves to comfort nurse

I had a forceful letdown when my milk came in so I've been block feeding for a long time. I don't seem to have that issue now. I also don't eat dairy (I'm vegan).

Any ideas? it's awful to see him in so much discomfort.

TIA
Alex

OK so the block nursing is going well - are you still doing it? If so can you also do some breast compression to get some hind milk into your ds, see the site www.drjacknewman.com and click on the videos of breast compression, it seems to me from the green poop that there is still an imbalance between fore and hind milk - the breast compression should help. Please post again if you have more questions - I just have to dash out and collect the kids from school but didn't want not to post. hugs.

Are you still block feeding? Definitely keep doing that, maybe longer blocks until you get rid of that green poop. As for the pain, have you tried massaging the belly? I know a lot of people here aren't big on Dr. Sears, but he has some good info on soothing uncomfortable or colicky babies. I would do belly massage (a la Dr. Sears), scrunching the legs to let gas out, colic carry, and try to keep him somewhat upright after eating. Some people go for gas drops, but I never found that helpful.

Are you supplementing by any chance? DD had trouble processing formula when she was very new.

Any feeeling like it could be reflux? Vomiting, stretching out the neck, painful crying? Sorry for all of the questions, it just sounds a lot like what we went through with DD. I hope you get things worked out soon.

Is this a problem that developed only recently, like less than a week ago? I don't know the history. Because if so it's very possible he's gotten some kind of GI virus-- like a stomach flu, you know? Those can hang on, in babies, for longer than they do in adults and older kids. Is the poop runny, and more copious than usual? It might be diarrhea. He may be having cramping or nausea, which would explain the crying, too.

If it's a problem he's had for awhile, that blows that theory. But I thought I would put it out there, just in case.

THANK YOU so much, everyone. DS is sleeping on me so a bit difficult to type... but:

I am still block feeding as it seems to be working for us. When he was a newborn he was vomiting a LOT - and copious amounts - but the blockfeeding helped and he hasn't been vomiting very much at all. The green poops started two weeks ago. I hadn't changed a thing that I'm aware of. I will try the compression.. thanks so much for the link.

I did take him to the Drs today and they thought it could be a few things: like a couple of you have suggested they considered a virus. The thing there is that he hasn't been vomiting, which they'd expect. The other possibility is that his stomach is emptying very quickly (I forget the medical terminology). The LO is gaining weight very quickly, tho. He gained a pound in a week this week..Finally they mentioned it could be an allergen. he'll have some blood taken tomorrow and we'll see. If that doesn't show up anything they suggested I do an elimination diet. Since I'm already vegan they suggested I start with soya.

I've been doing the baby massage. Not sure about the reflux. His little legs go wild and his entire body stretches. It's heartbreaking to watch.

I'm not supplementing at all... so no formula.

Oh yes, they tested his stool and it did have blood in it.

Poor little guy.

THANKS so much for your support, everyone.
