D and A work together. If you are not getting enough of one or the other, the body will not utilize what is being taken.
Hence the reason the HVCLO ratios work so well.

So this is just a random thing, but I need to tell somebody. I told DH and he kindof understands but men's brains don't work the same way and so even though he's sympathetic he doesn't truly *get* it, you know?

(btw Katie, this is TOTALLY not directed at you nor trying to hint at anything, although you're certainly on the invite list if you're interested. )
We've lived here in Homer for about two months now, and we're getting settled in with the church and our neighbors and so on, but we don't have any super close friends yet. I'm 35wks pg today, and definitely nesting. I've begun feeling this major desire for, well, not a baby shower...but some kind of baby-centric female fellowship. I don't need or want any stuff (for the baby or for me really), I just want people to get together with me and give attention to the pregnancy and teh baby--something beyond "so when are you due?" you know? Last time around my sister and I lived in ajacent towns, and were due 10 wks apart, so we threw showers for each other. Actually I threw a shower for her and she threw (with my help ) a blessingway-ish thing for me because that was what I wanted. Anyway, now I don't have any family anywhere near by, none of my close friends live anywhere close, and I'm feeling the need of some of that female support, you know? But I'm not close enough to anybody to approach them and ask them to throw me a shower/blessingway, nor do I really know anyone who would know me well enough as well as knowing how to throw me a blessingway anyway (and it was kinda awkward trying to lead my own last time around, I dont' really want to do that again).
The one idea I've had is to try to organize a little henna party--to do my belly and everyone else can do hands or feet (or just be artists) and I do know a few people around here who would be comfortable with that I think. So it really wouldn't be baby-centric per se, but it would be a good gathering of feminine energy and I think that might do the trick. I'm going to ask my mw tomorrow at my appointment if she knows of anyone in the area who does henna, but if she doesn't then I may just have to find a friend who's willing to give it a shot.
(OT--1timestar, can you give me pointers on doing henna on bellies? Last time I know the artist put some kind of oil on my belly first but I dont' know what it was and I dont' remember if it has to sit or whatever else...I so wish you were close enough that I could have you do it!!)

Anyway, yeah, just needed to tell somebody all about it.

I was thinking of doing a "baby welcoming party" rather than a baby shower... I think "baby showers" put too much emphasis on gift giving, and I would rather people get to know the new baby instead.. but still, there should be food, kwim?

I have given this some thought as well brightonwoman!

Jenni, That sounds like fun.

I do totally know what you mean. With my first I moved cross country to Montana at 7 months pregnant. At least I did have a very wonderful sister within 100 miles but I would have loved some more girl power energy stored up.

I'm not sure what she would have put on your belly BEFORE hennaing as you really want to clean any lotions or oil off of your skin before hand. They interfer with the stain. Perhaps she was using an alcohol based hand sanityzer to clean your skin. Even normal oils from skin interfers. Especially with the stretched belly skin so difficult to stain...

Remind me, have you mixed your own paste before? If not, you can order some great premixed paste or I would be happy to help you mix your own. But be warned, there is a learning curve to getting your paste just right. There is no "one way" to do it as it is dependant on what type of henna powder you get, what you are hennaing, your skin chemistry, the climate, etc. It all can effect your paste and your stain. I can recomend some good places to order from. I wouldn't get any from anywhere except two places who are garunteed henna suppliers as you really need to be sure what is in the premixed paste.

Look at Catherine's page and see if you want to order either her premixed, or her powder and mix it yourself. You can totally have a great time doing it yourself and your friends.

Well perhaps that's why my henna didn't last very long....naw, I've had henna done a couple of times and it just doesn't seem to last that long on me. I think she did an EO of some kind, then waited like 10 min before doing the henna...I dont' remember what it was. tea tree maybe? Maybe her intent was teh cleansing like you're talking about, but it does seem weird to use an oil to remove oil...
I have mixed my own henna to use in my hair, but not for my skin. The henna I buy for my hair (which I do have quite a bit on hand--just in powder) is body-art quality, but it's "last year's henna" as in (according to the company) it's not ideal for body use anymore, but is still great for hair. I talked with several experienced hair-hennaers, and they recommended a site (which I can't remember right now...henna4hair or something) and that site had a list of recommended suppliers...but there again, that was with hair in mind. So I appreciate the recommendations--I'll look at them.
Is mixing body henna paste any different from mixing it for hair? For my hair i mix it with very hot water to the thick goopy consistency I want, mixing really thoroughly (and no metal touching it), then put plastic wrap over the bowl and let it sit for several hours before using it...I just do it in a bowl and use a gloved hand to put it in my hair, but obviously for body use I'll need a little applicator of some kind...presumably that will come with the henna when I order it?

Oh geeze, there should ALWAYS be food. How can it be considered a celebration without food.
I dont' really want a whole bunch of people coming over (esp all at once) when I have a newborn. Particularly not in winter...I don't want my baby getting sick. I guess with a summer baby I might not worry so much, but in wintertime I'm a little paranoid about that...i'd rather have all the guests over while baby is still safely inside me.
I dont' want it to be all gift-centric though, no. That's why I'm thinking the henna... it had also occurred to me to do what one of my friends did, which was to ask each person to bring a frozen meal that she could put in her freezer to use in those early days after the birth. I think that's a great idea.

Lol yea, that's Catherine too.

Catherine is the leading henna expert in the country and runs The Henna Page. You can feel safe ordering anything from her. Or Jen at Henna Muse. http://www.hennamuseshop.com/ Henna Caravan is also very trustworthy and has a great how to section. The KISS recipie is really good even for beginners.

You should use lavander as it is the safest EO for pregnancy. I can't believe someone calling themselves a henna artist put EO directly on your skin, especially a pregnant belly!

You could probably use the powder you have if it has been kept in the freezer. If not stored properly, you wont get a good stain. Also, don't use hot water as you can cook your henna. Not as essential when doing hair. The difference between henna for hair and for body is adding EO and some type of sugar. Sugar will draw moisture out of the air and help keep your henna from cracking off. Heat and moisture help make the stain.

You can buy jacard (jac) bottles or cones for applying it. Or you can just give your guests some gloves and have them finger paint on your belly. I can see that being great fun. Jac bottles are easier for beginners but cones are easier to use after you get used to them (and learn to roll and fill them) and are what most professionals use. They're lots easier on your hands too.

Yep... a meal brigade is something I ALWAYS wanted.

With my last pregnancy I had picked out a midwife (I only met her the once), but now I can't find her name to contact her again! She had a rather different first name and she has an accent.. her practice is out of Healing Arts Chiro... anyone recall her name? thanks.

ah, well, that's handy. I got my hair henna from henna caravan, but it has not been in the freezer, so I'll get something new for this.
I went to that other site you linked--oh my word there's about a hundred options of things to buy there! They said that if I call they will help me figure out which I need though, so probably I'll do that.

I'll make sure to look up directions for proper mixing for skin then...I will be doing it at 37 1/2 wks, so maybe if I can get a good stain I can get it to last through till labor! That would be very cool!! (Last time I got about a week, but I did it earlier and it was long gone when birth day came around). Catherine has the bottles, right? I think you're right that that will be easiest for beginners--which we definitely all will be. But i can wash and save a bottle and reuse it for future henna play too

Thank you thank you for all the pointers and help!!!

SO ANNOYED

So we got direct deposit for our pfds...I went to check the bank account this morning to make sure that they were in there and Hubby and the boys' have been deposited, but mine has not. I went to the pfd site and it says mine is still being evaluated to see if I qualify. How on earth would I not qualify if the rest of the family does?! I'm so frustrated though, we were counting on having that money this weekend--we're driving up to Anchorage and need to do a bunch of shopping and I'm really miffed at not having that other thousand dollars that we were figuring we'd have.

WOW! They really should have told you about this BEFORE today!

Dang, that blows goats.

When my kids were denied they told us about is in May. We appealed and the denial was reversed last month.
