Mammogram vent

Just a quick vent here. I just got back from having to have a spot compression and a sonogram because the mammogram I had a couple of weeks ago was hard to read, because I'm lactating. So, I had told the people at the radiology clinic that I was lactating when I made the initial appointment. I made the appointment because my OB/GYN wanted me to. My sister had been diagnosed with breast cancer this year so he thought it was important.

Today, I tell the technician as she's putting a sticky thing on my nipple that I'm lactating. She reacts with a big What?! goes off to consult with a doctor whether they should continue with this. Then she comes back and says scoldingly, you should have a mammogram only after you've stopped breastfeeding for at least 6 months. I say, my doctor knows I'm lactating and wanted it done. No one has ever told me that. She says, how old is the baby? I say, 9 months. Her (in shocked surprise): 9 months? Why are you breastfeeding so long? I said, It's not that long. She said, when are you going to stop? I said, I don't know. I should think at least a year if not longer. She didn't say anything after that but isn't it funny that people think that 9 months is a long time? I wrote a note about it not being really appropriate for a technician to behave as though I were deliberately doing something to make the job of looking for cancerous growths in my breasts harder by breastfeeding my baby and stuck it in the suggestion box.

I hope you worded the suggestion like you did here, cuz it's awesome. You're absolutely right it's absurd.

And DUH breastfeeding also helps prevent breast cancer. I'm glad you made a complaint.

I had a breast ultrasound at around that same time, when my twins were 9 months, and got a similar reaction. It really bothered me. You'd think that given what we know about the role of breastfeeding in preventing breast cancer, and given that these people are supposed to be SPECIALISTS in breast health, that they'd be a little more informed on the topic, right? Apparently not so.

I'm glad you wrote something. I have been wishing for ages that I had.

My GI doc was also incredulous when my twins were 15 months, that they were still breastfeeding. And I'm told that breastfeeding is one of the best ways I can prevent my kids developing the same GI disease I have. So he ought to know better, too.

I worded it pretty much that way.

And as for bfing being preventative, of course! Why didn't I think of that at the time? I would have loved to have said that.
