plaster face mask making without vaseline

Hello mamas --

My son is in a class in which they will be making masks of their faces. The teacher has asked if we are all ok using Vaseline to help the plaster masks peel off afterward. I am wondering if anyone has experience using a salve-type base (just the oil and beeswax) for this type of project, and if the mask came off in one piece.

Any help or suggestions welcome. I'd rather not put Vaseline on his skin.

Thanks!

Any thick oily substance will do.

Not sure how soon you need it and if you could order this or find it locally but this product is awesome: http://www.unpetroleum.com/.

If not, I'd bet the salve would work but I don't have first hand knowledge.

My experience is that more natural stuff absorbs into the skin better and therefore doesn't provide as good a barrier as petroleum jelly.

I used specturm organic shortening when i made my belly cast. I used a lot but it worked fine. (btw I only used it because we had it and didn't have vaseline at the time, it was WAY more expensive!)
