..at the trial of a father who (allegedly) put a gang tattoo on his 7 yo. son!!

"A defense attorney, seeking to undermine the potential mayhem charge, raised the issue of a painful, irreversible, and increasingly controversial medical procedure with the boy's pediatrician, a witness for the prosecution.

"Which is more painful, circumcision or a tattoo?" asked public defender Manuel Nieto about the practice performed on a decreasing number of newborn boys.

"I would guess the circumcision," Dr. Carmela Sosa responded."

Fascinating!

Wow, that is interesting. Weird to think that you can go to prison for life for tatooing a child but can cut off a part of a sexual organ and that's just fine, as long as it's done by a doctor.

Wow, very interesting.

Tatooing...cultural scarification - Same Sh** different day...I'm with the defense on this one.

I can cut 'em up...permanently scar him...but tattooing is a no no... At least a tattoo can be removed and doesn't screw up his sexual organ.

Exactly! It all depends on your paradigm.

Oh the precidence this can set...

Yeah a tatoo can get removed but it can hurt I'm for sure of and it's done without any pain relief .

It's the same 'scarring of a child' for body modification !

I was surprised they admitted circumcision was painful.

I wonder -- for argument sake -- if the boy is circumcissed can dad now come back and charge doctors and mom for circ'ing the boy and tattoo removing because both are body modifications that truly cannot be agreed to by minor child.

Poor kid!!!!!!!

But yes, fascinating implications in that testimony!!

"It's an interesting issue," Levenson said. "I don't think kids belong to their parents. You can give a child the haircut you want him to have, but you can't permanently disfigure a child."

That's something I'd like to see.

I completely agree with this statement. The circumcision is definitely more painful.

(On a side note, we took DD to a tattoo convention and while DP was getting his tattoo DD and I were walking around. We ended up getting her this rub on tattoo - ya know, rub on with water - and people seriously kept asking me if we really got her tattooed. Who does that? ... well apparently this father but besides him, who does that?)

In many states its illegal to put a tatoo on a minor but there are a few state who still allow it with a parent consent & the parent has to be there with the child. Montana is sadly one of the states who allows tatooing of kids with parental supervision.

MD allows tattoos of minors at 16 with parental consent/presence.

Sadly I have seen kids as young as 10 - 11 with them....it is part of their family's "gang" culture on their neck.

As much as I don't agree with tattooing a minor (or circumcision for that matter) a life sentence for putting a quarter sized tattoo on his son is a little harsh. Especially when tattooing a minor is a misdemeanor in California.

I agree.

The last I saw was the life sentence was downgraded to 7 years.

What I find bizarre is the guy who circed 3 infants with a boxcutter knife (one of whom bled for 11 hours) is only looking at getting 150 days...
