I need a child's book with a black cat as the main character

Ok, we're sort of cheating.....

DD's school does a literary parade in lieu of kids dressing up for Halloween at school. You don't have to participate for if you do, the kids all take their favorite character from a book to dress up as. It's can't be violent characters, cartoon characters, movie or tv characters etc... It has to be from a book. If you don't follow these rules, you can't participate.

Well, DD has some significant sensory issues around clothing. She's super sensitive to anything itchy or anything she might perceive as itchy. So, Halloween (and dress up) is a real challenge for her.

So, we found this black body suit that is very soft - nothing itchy or scratchy so we're good. She figures she can be a cat.

So, we're sort of cheating by finding the costume and then trying to find a book character to match but, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

But, I am planning on having her find a book with a black cat as the main character and reading it so she's following the rules of the parade.

Anyway, this is my long winded way of asking if anyone has any book recommendations. She's reading chapter books - about the 2nd grade level. Can you think of any books that have a black cat as the main character?

John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat - Jenny Wagner and Ron Brooks?

It's probably a bit young for her but it's a nice book, with a black cat.

Slinky Malinki

Way too young for her, but fun to read anyway.

This one looks interesting....

Time Cat: The Remarkable Journeys of Jason and Gareth
by Lloyd Alexander

or

Hate that Cat by Sharon Creech

Are those beyond DD's reading level? I'll keep looking around.

I just looked on Amazon.com, there is a book there named The Black Cat book

For added value, much of it is just visual humor, cavorting cats playing with toys, things a little girl might like in spite of a lower or more advanced reading level.

Is your heart set on black cats? How about the panther from The Jungle Book?

Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion

or Black Beauty?

Jenny's Moonlight Adventure (New York Review Children's Collection, a Jenny's Cat Club Book) by Esther Averill

There are lots of Jenny Books.....they were a favorite of mine....not sure how outdated they are now.

Don't remember what color the cat was, but Bony Legs has a cat in it that is one of the central characters and the book is perfect for halloween.

Sophie's Tom by Dick King-Smith (he wrote Babe, The Gallant Pig) is a lovely little story that's good for early readers.

Catwings by Ursula K. LeGuin is another good book. You can probably find some ready-made wings at a novelty store, or make your own.

The Hallowe'en costume/story book idea is nice. I hope she enjoys it!

I was going to recommend that or Joan Carris's "Witch Cat".

Jenny Linsky from the Jenny and the Cat Club books is perfect! All she needs is a red scarf to complete the look.
