Our little girl arrived 16 minutes before midnight on Tuesday the 29th. She weighed in a 9lbs 4ozs. and is 21 inches long. We are all at home and adjusting well. The longer story is posted below...
Things started on Monday afternoon. I felt more crampy than usual and lost a chunk of my mucus plug. As evening came, the crampiness became regular contractions that were consistently 10 minutes apart. They were very light at the beginning, but became more uncomfortable as midnight approached. I had a lot of trouble finding a restful position that was comfortable. Sitting didn't work and lying down didn't feel any better. Mostly I just walked around and stood through contractions.
Around 2 in the morning, the contractions were still 10 minutes apart and I was concerned that they were not close enough to do much, so I hopped in the bathtub hoping it would either get things going or stop things and allow me to get some sleep. It did neither, but it was more comfortable.
The contractions continued in this way and I went to my normally scheduled ob appointment the next morning. This involved a NST, which confirmed the 10 minute contractions and showed that the baby was handling everything well. So off to home we went.
Contractions continued through the day, but began getting closer and more intense in the afternoon. By 5:30, they were 5 minutes apart and I felt it was time to go to the hospital.
We finally got settled into a room and I was checked to reveal that I was only 4 cm. I was a bit discouraged and very tired by this point and opted for an epidural. Once that was in, things progressed steadily and by 11 I was 8 cm. In 1/2 hour I was complete and ready to push. I pushed through three contractions and she was out. After such a long labor, the short delivery was wonderful!
She was put on my chest immediately and she latched on easily and quickly. She's been nursing like a champ ever since!
Good luck to all those mamas who are still waiting, and congratulations to all the other mothers with their little ones in their arms!
