name that squash, and tell me how to cook it, pretty please

It's on the small side, like about two fists big. It's pumpkin shaped, and striped yellow and green. Does anybody know what this is, and maybe something about what flavor I can expect? The only winter squashes we've had here are butternut and acorn squash. Is this kind likely to be very different?

Thank you!

Also, does anybody know how the baking time on sweet potatoes, apples, and winter squash compare? Like if I were to slice these up together and bake them with butter and a touch of brown sugar, maybe some cinnamon and nutmeg, will they be evenly cooked? Or should I add the apples later in the cooking time? Do I peel the apples, or no?

Yellow and green.. hmm.. is it delicata?

Those ingredients should all bake together, they should be fine all put in the oven together. Sounds good! I might put a pinch of salt in there too to add depth to the flavor (right now it's a lot of sweet).

Forgot to answer your question on difference in squash.. in my experience there's not too much difference, just nuances. The only difference in cooking time between varieties would really have to do with the size of the squash you are cooking (a factor which can be negated if you cut it up beforehand, anyway).

Hmm, are you sure it's not a pumpkin? Before our pumpkins got big, they were yellow and green striped.

I don't think it's delicata-- it's shaped like a pumpkin. It may very well be a pumpkin, actually. It came from my CSA and was boxed with other "winter squash"-- besides this kind, there were the more familiar butternut and acorn squashes, in that same box.

I found this-- http://whatscookingamerica.net/squash.htm
I think it might be carnival squash.

Anyway, I ran out of time to cook it tonight, so we're going to try it tomorrow, with the sweet potatoes and apples.

Thanks for helping!

Anybody got any other yummy things to do with squash?

Onions and raisins come to mind, along with the apples and sweet potato that you mentioned.

I'm going to be making hamburger filled acorn squash for dinner this week. Brown up some hamburger, add some veggies and spices, and cook inside half a squash. Yum!

Sounds like it could be a sweet dumpling? They are fairly small.

We had one of these last week. To cook I just cut it in half lengthwise, scooped out the seeds, and baked (cut side down) in a roasting pan for about 40 minutes at 350. When they were done I put a bit of butter on the inside of the "bowl" and sprinkled a little salt. It was very tasty, mild but a bit nutty.
