what are your favorite diaper myths?

Thread Starter
such as "no, i don't use diaper pins"

I'm speaking tomorrow about cloth diapers at the Houston 8th Annual Birth Fair, and I need to update my resources ... yes, I'm waiting til the last minute. (last update was 2007 !) I've been doing this speaking engagement for 6 years, but I've been out of the retail industry for a year now, so I am not as confident as I usually am.

Spam me with your favorite cloth diaper websites, thanks!

People are surprised when they see DS's BGs. They don't think cloth diapers have improved in the past 20 years or so. It's fun to educate people though

My favorite cloth diaper site is MMB (good deals and free shipping!)

People always say cloth is too much work, which I don't understand at all. How much work is an extra load of laundry? They don't wear disposable clothes.

Myths I've heard:

Cloth diapers cause diaper rash.

Once you calculate in utilities, there is no cost benefit.

Cloth diapering is very time consuming.

Not really a myth but I've been suprised how many IRL are totally turned off with the fancier cloth diapers like say pockets but a snappi gets a huge audience. They can not wrap there heads around a $17 diaper but a $2 item that elimates pins and they want to know sooo much.

That they have to be dunked in the toilet - ewww!
That you can't travel or go camping with cloth
That you have to own a washer/dryer to use cloth
That you have to be a SAHM to use cloth

My favorite site is Jillian's Drawers

That you're not allowed to put poopy stuff in your washing machine. A lot of people think that putting poop in your washer is gross and that it's not okay/safe to put them in your machine. I love shocking people with the info that it's illegal to put human waste in the landfill and that you're actually supposed to shake the poop out of sposies.

I love cottonbabies.com and thirstiesoutlet.com and jillian's drawers too! I've ordered from lots of different places though....

It's SOOO much work.
That it's not actually more green to use cloth.

lol, I was going to say the opposite. Reading so many of people's washing routines is NOT green or a little bit of work. Sometimes the washing routines make my head spin.

I agree!

That they are unsanitary and too much work.

My favorite sight is Pittsburgh cloth diapers and Kelly's Closet as well as Bananapeels

They're hot...

Too bulky... (can make it hard to walk, etc.)...

Uncomfortable...

Hard to use...

Smelly...

Gross...

Unattractive...

Just a few misconceptions off the top of my head!
Before I had ds and everyone knew that i wanted to do cloth I heard these misconceptions:

no one makes/uses cloth anymore
i will get 2 wks in and quit...which actually fueled my desire to use cloth even more!!

my all time fav- "i thought only the amish still use cloth diapers..."
-its unsanitary
-they stink
-they cause rashes

Yeah, I use pins, too. I am way defensive about this. "No really, most cloth diaper-ers don't use pins, really, I swear! I just like them!" I make it sound like I have a pin-loving personality disorder.

They smell

they are old fashioned - who uses cloth today? A neighbor asked me that with my third.

they are bulky

it will take your child longer to walk, etc b/c of the bulk

you have to buy much bigger pants for them to fit

I love www.cottonbabies.com and '

www.allaboutclothdiapers.com

and of course, diaperswappers.

Take care and lots of luck!

That cloth isn't *really* any better for the environment.
But really, if using the washing machine is so bad for the environment, why don't we all wear disposable everything?

That one gets me every time.

That they don't work as well as sposies. Really? The only time we had poop up the back blowouts was when dd was in a sposie!

Favorite cloth site... green mountain diapers
also loving all the various etsy sites with wool soakers and longies

.
I always remind people who say this that eventually their kid is going to toilet train, and then there will be poo in the washer. It's not a big deal.

: Around here I know a lot of people who do cloth pt but it's mostly because of cost, so they buy cheap flannel fitteds and rubber pants and then say that cloth doesn't work, you can't use it for a nap etc. I just want to bang my head against a wall because it's not cloth in general, it's YOUR cloth. Some quality prefolds would last SO much longer. /rant

Another vote for Green Mountain Diapers... I just started looking into CDing and all the types/info are quite for a newbie. That site has great info for people who are so new to CDing that have no idea what an AIO vs. a PUL are.
