I was just kind of snarky to an OB

So I was reporting a story about a new hospital opening. They've had three births in two days, one of which was a C-section. The OB I was interviewing told me that. And I swear, the words just kind of flew right out of my mouth -- I said, "Hey, one out of three C-section rate. You're right in line with the national average."
He very quickly said, "We'll be much lower than that" and proceeded to tell me some good birthing policies they had (encouraging doulas, working with births plans, keeping mother with baby, thinking about bringing in birth pools, etc.)
It was actually the first time I had ever been in a maternity ward. It was pretty nice looking -- dim lights, wood paneling. But at the end of the day, it made me so grateful for my homebirth. Hospital birthing (barring a medical emergency) is such an alien concept to me now.

Eh, that wasn't all that snarky. At least he countered with their rates will be much lower, rather than something like..."We plan to be above the national average."

That's not snarky at all!!!

That made me LOL :
It is exactly the kind of thing I would say.

I don't think it was snarky either. It was a very good point.

Well, it was a *little* snarky, IMO But not the least bit out of line! Good for you. More of us need to be challenging OBs about their birth habits and stats.

Well, if YOU hadn't said it, who would've? All the other mothers in line waiting for their pit and epis?

I like the guy for what he responded with--I can imagine another doctor just giving you an odd look, confused, and be like, "So?"

LOL, great response! Let's hope his reply holds true.

Way to go!

If you're ever in that situation again, you could simply say in your interview: "The national cesarean rate has now reached nearly 1/3 of all births and over half of the amount recommended by the World Health Organization? Are there any specific steps that your facility plans to take to help reduce this number?"

It's awesome that the OB you talked to volunteered the commitment to lower the rate. But journalists wield a lot of power in holding these institutions publicly accountable, so I wouldn't be shy about deliberately bringing up this issue.
