Someone wrote that in Canada a mother's right to breastfeed is protected wherever she (that is the mother) has a right to be, irregardless of the child's right, and that mothers are allowed to breastfeed in locations such as bars.
If this is true, how do these rights work? Do they confer on a nursing child the right to be in a location? For example, if I'm working does this give me the right to bring my child to work? Does the child continue to have this right to be there when they aren't nursing? For example, can I bring my nursing babe into a bar, nurse her and then put her in the sling and stay for a drink, or does their right to be their evaporate when they unlatch? Does the child's age have any bearing on this? For example, if I'm allowed to bring my nursing newborn to an X-rated movie, can I bring my 4 year old on the grounds that they're nursing? Are they contingent on the child's behavior in any way? If I bring my child to a concert and they're crying while nursing can they kick me out? If I bring my 3 year old someplace and they're running around between nursing sessions can they be asked to leave?
Also, as a parent who fed their child with a feeding tube, is it conceivable that they, or a bottle fed child might be excluded from a setting where a nursing babe would be allowed?
I'm not sure I understand how this law would work? I totally understand laws that protect a child's right to nurse wherever they have the right to be, and support them 100%, but I'm not sure I understand how a law can protect a dyad's right to nurse in a location that they aren't both allowed to be in.
For that matter, I'm not sure if I could imagine a law that allows a mother the right to breastfeed in a location where her child has the right to be but she doesn't. Of course I can't think of many locations like that, but a men's room with a male child might be one, or someplace like the childcare at IKEA where parents aren't allowed inside, but must pick up and drop off at the door.
