I'v been considering wool soakers lately, especially for nite time because ds diaper cover and pants roll over the front of his pf and are wet/smelly in the morning. I don't know much about soakers, though. Are they more bulky? Would fleece be better? pros/cons? experience, suggestions, etc...

I haven't tried fleece.
I love wool soakers. They work really well. However, for night time, I don't think they'd work too well due to compression. What I would do is put on a regular cover and then a wool cover on top. This way, the majority of the moisture is being kept way and the wool can handle the little left over.
As far as smell is concerned, the pf would smell the same. I haven't noticed a difference.
You can buy regular fleece pants to use as a soaker. At least to try out. The only difference between fleece & wool is that wool just needs to be dried out between uses, whereas fleece needs to be washed.

let me get this straight... (i don't have any experience w/ wool) w/ a wool soaker, it just covers the diaper, prefold or fitted and nothing seeps out?
|
AKislandgirl, I only use a wool soaker during the day, with no other cover. I've been told about compression issues of wool & fleece, which makes me want to double cover for night time when there will definitely be compression issues.
I use the soakers in the summer, and longies in winter time. I've never put another bottom on him. Of course, if I had one of those wraps, I'd probably use that under pants/shorts.
I LOVE wool though. If only it were more affordable, I'd have all wook with a couple PUL covers. Ds is such a hard fit. Super skinny legs, long rise. Wool shorties & longies are fit in such a way that I don't need to worry about leg chunk (or lack thereof).

For our 2.5 yo ds, we often use a fitted with a hemp doubler and a wool interlock soaker. It's very rare that we get leaks.
I've tried one fleece cover overnight and he leaked out the top, but I think that the fit just isn't quite right for night (that particular brand). That same fleece cover works great during the day.
I think it depends on the wool you have, if it's well lanolized, and if you have enough absorabancy underneath.
I have some knitted wool that I use for ds2 (8 wks today!) during the day, but they wouldn't last all night for us (when we get to that point!). The key for us has been the double layer interlock wool. Well, I've never tried aristocrats or disana, though.

Maybe that was our problem - these are the brands I tried. I lanolized them to the point of stickiness and put 2 prefolds and a Joey-Bunz underneath and the bed was still soaked. Double-layer interlock would probably have worked.

i have never had success with wool alone overnight, but i have heard tons of people say it works really well. i do use wool longies at pj bottoms though, because they looks so comfy and warm, and catch any pee that may leak out of her regular night time diaper. i love wool and plan to use a lot of it this winter. i just wish longies werent so expensive

sorry meant to come back to check this...
Yep, just 2 night time soakers. I guess I should have clarified that. We have some lighter weight ones that we use for day that wouldn't work for night. I think that is the key. The disana really is awesome. I've heard the same about the 'crat. I want the aristocrat longies for winter but as said above they are expensive!
I read up on wool on GMD. Karen has some good info there. I'm so glad it does work well but the double cover system would probably be a good option if you needed a little extra coverage.

I like wool soakers/longies for night but they do sometimes feel damp by morning. The bedding stays dry though.
I also might try a different style of pul cover, maybe a side snapping one like Motherease airflow. That's my favourite pul cover because of the fit, and because it squishes down to fit under any pants. Maybe a bigger size wouldn't roll down?
