Congrats and welcome Gavin!

Congrats on the delivery!

It sounds like your hospital experience is much like mine was with DS 1. I couldn't wait to get out of there. It turned out that though they would release ME, they wouldn't release the baby for 48 hrs. It took until I was hime and in my own space for me to really feel human again, so hopefully you can make it there soon.

If you can, ask them to restrict blood sugar checks to 10-30 mins after a good nursing session- that way you're likely to have better numbers.

Things are doing better...I insisted they do a heel stick to recheck Gavin's platelets, and lo and behold they came back normal. They did another glucose, and it also came back normal, so now that he's had 12 hours of normal readings, we're done with that. The only stick left for the little guy is his newborn screen tomorrow.

My labs look fine now too, my hemaglobin is down to only 8.4, which is kind of low, but I'll just take it easy and take some iron once in a while (not daily until I'm pooping!!)

I have resorted to cooking in cast iron and trying to get in some iron rich foods. I still have enough discomfort (there was tearing and some rectal/bowel involvement/strain during pushing...) that I'm terrified to risk constipation.

Glad things are going better.

A Hemaglobin of 8.4 is quite low. No wonder you said you almost passed out. Did you lose quite a bit of blood during birth? I can say that I was anemic during this pregnancy and took Floradix and my numbers went up to normal in less that 2 weeks. Also, Floradix (liquid) is formulated to be non-constipating. I was a bit worried that the bottle was lying about that but I haven't had any problems with bowel function while on it. and I am someone with a super sensitive system. I actually just bought a new bottle today since I've been out for a few days. Anyways, I hope you two are doing great and get sprung soon

i was a little surprised they didn't make a bigger deal about my hemaglobin, but it was mentioned to me almost off hand. i didn't lose a lot of blood during delivery, but it seemed to me that i did after. but no one else said anything about it. i sure did feel horrible for a few hours right after the birth, the shakes, light headedness, very weak. only for a few hours though, now i'm fine. my placenta was really big--i'm going to weigh it, i swear it was the size of another baby! so i wonder if there was more bleeding from it detaching.

i'm definitely going to get floradix, the iron pills scare me!! i'm so afraid of pooping!

Congratulations!

HURRAY, HURRAY, HURRAY! I am so happy for you. Gavin must be beautiful. I stopped checking in on you over the weekend because my parents and inlaws invaded my house and it has been hectic and of course you went into labor when I wasn't looking. It must have been that watched pot thing. I am sorry about you missing out on the birth center, but it sounds like they let you do it your way for the most part. That's great. And nice touch about the no circ request! You are very funny! And direct! Anyway, I am looking forwad to hearing that you are home and comfy...and don't forget pictures!

Congrats!

And PS. Funny you should mention the ring of fire because I actually sang that song when I was pushing and my whole birth team chimed in...very comical.

Okay, I just tested the link...you have to choose the date (Oct 3) and then click on my name (Samantha B.) and then you can access his album.

I hope this link works...it's to the hospital's webpage and the pictures they took. They're pretty good I think!

I successfully negotiated our way out of there on Sunday, even bypassing the pediatrician's "policy" of 48 hours of all GBS positive moms I declined the post partum RhoGAM even though Gavin's blood type is Rh+, it just seemed like one more "medical" thing I didn't want, and since hubby had his vas already anyway, I'm comfortable with the risk.

My mom is here for a week, and it's GREAT having her! I was able to sleep in about 2 hour increments all night, and woke up this morning feeling wonderful! Gavin's poop already changed over to breastmilk poop, and he's already spitting up feeds (yay, another spitty baby ) so I know my milk is fully in, but I don't feel engorged at all either. I'm also not leaking, and I'm not feeling let-down, which is very odd to me! I've always had a very strong painful let down that lasts for months, and I leak a lot, so this is odd! I think that Gavin is just a really good nurser, and Connor is doing a fine job of lapping up any excess I'm going to start pumping by the end of the week to start building my freezer stash, I'm almost giddy with excitement to see that freezer stash grow (I know, I know, the things that get me excited!)

So we're all doing well, and I've already (almost) forgotten all about how horrible it was to be pregnant! It's a good thing my husband got the vas while I was still pregnant, because right now I might just say "let's hold off a while and see..." which is NOT GOOD!! No, this baby making factory is closed, and although it's bittersweet, I'm very happy to end it on this beautiful wonderful baby!!!!!
