We live in front of a park and I take the dog for walks there with ds...I was self conscious about peeing him in the park until I read a quote (I don't remember where...) But if a dog can pee there, so can a baby! That has become my new rule of thumb for appropriateness. When out camping, I carried a bottle of water to water down poopies in the grass and have not gotten any dirty looks yet, only inquisitive ones, but I see it as an opportunity to share the wisdom of natural, eco-friendly non-diapering. EC moms should be proud to dare to challenge our society's hyper-consumerism! But I must admit that sometimes, I rather let ds pee in his cloth to avoid having to get into it with strangers...good luck and keep on keeping on!

Here we are, still peeing in US parking lots (pavement and grassy areas) at 20 months - wondering when I'm gonna get a snide comment, but so far so good. In even less appropriate areas, and in other countries when I didn't want to offend, I would still pee him in public areas but into the diaper. We used disposables while traveling and it was so easy to just tug down the pants, open the tabs, and peel the thing forward enough to give him the sense of peeing into the air. Discrete enough for the airplane seat, even, but that was with a babe under one. I keep a collection of g-diaper inserts and cloth prefolds each in their own plastic bag in the car. If necessary for politeness, or if think a poop is a possibility, I can pee him publically as ususal, but make sure it all lands on the diaper, so really who can complain about that?
I also carry a potette plus in the car, which is more useful if a poop is a sure thing, but it gets less use than I was hoping so far. That's only because my boy is still just not into potties or real toilets if the great outdoors or mama's arms are available. I think it's a fabulous product otherwise, and I wish I had 2, so we could work with it more easily at home too. Don't worry about not having a pee guard - that's what your longest finger is for!
What do moms of older kids do who are toilet-training in the country where you live? That should be a good indicator of public tolerance.

We use a potty bowl, this is the one:

I have a DD, but I know that most of the mums in our potty group use this, even the ones with little boys. One of them told us she has to point her son's penis down, but that it still works.
It is good because it travels easily. I keep a diaper flat rolled up in it, to soak up wees if we are out with no suitable place to wash it out.
