Thanksgiving menu

Next weekend is Thanksgiving here - what are you making? Do you do the same thing every year or always try something new?
My MIL is hosting this year, so I am not sure what we will be having other than turkey. And sausage balls - all the men are obsessed with sausage balls.

But this Apple Sausage and Cranberry Stuffing is THE best. So yum. I make it whenever I do turkey and craved it while I was pregnant!

I'm being different this year.

I'm making coq au vin (which is sooo yummy), and corn pudding. Might add another veggie side. For dessert pumpkin pie of course!

Mmmm can't wait.

I take the flavors of T-day/fall and present them in new and different ways each year.

One year that was cold roast turkey cubed, served with a hot cranberry port sauce for the main dish.

Other dishes have included:
Cranberry fritters (like a doughnut hole w/a cranberry inside)
Cranberry salsa (a bit spicy) served w/cream cheese and crackers
Green salad w/a creamy cranberry vinaigrette
Corn fritters topped w/an arugula salad
Mashed sweet potatoes w/garlic and rosemary
Pumpkin bread pudding
Chocolate pecan tart
Pumpkin custard profiteroles with maple caramel sauce one year and made it again the next year with pumpkin ice cream instead of custard
Cranberry eggnog tart
Cream of Chestnut soup
Pumpkin soup
Roasted Corn Chowder
Persimmon (steamed) pudding

This year with a new LO, I'm keeping it simple... the salsa and the bread pudding will be my contributions.

i'm pretty boring and keep it the same each year:

turkey with homemade stuffing
yams
mashed garden potatoes with cream cheese
homemade buns
salad
pumpkin pie/sugar pie/lemon meringue pie

i would like to try a new vegetable side dish, i'm not sure what yet though.

We're vegan and having T-Day with my grandma/Aunt/Uncle/Cousin/other Uncle and his g/f..we'renot sure what other family will be there but we are sure that my fam is NOT veg friendly...they just don't know how to be~

They are having turkey/stuffing w some reserved for us that hasn't touched the chickens butt
buns
gravy
mashed turnip
i'm not sure what other dishes

I think I'm bringing 3 types of potatoes all vegan, one plain mashed, one mashed with roasted garlic/chives and then spicy roasted potatoes.
I'm also thinking of doing a bean salad. Something that the omnis will eat as well as us And a green bean sautee with garlic, onion, tomatoes and pine nuts.
Dessert is usually pumpkin pie, I'm thinking of attempting a vegan one, who knows though

I'm really not sure BUT I LOVE THANKSGIVING!!!

Mmmm I love thanksgiving! I love that it's a holiday all about family. No gifts, no big outings or activities, just love and good food.

The menu so far:
  • Shrimp salad served in an avacado, garnished with heirloom cherry tomatoes.
  • Corn fritters to dip in spicy maple syrup and gravy (of course).
  • Butternut squash tossed in chili garlic oil, with spicy maple glazed pecans on top.
  • Apple pineapple salad.
  • Turkey, with onion bread stuffing.
  • Beer baked ham.
  • Garlic smashed potatoes.
  • Creamy mascarpone parmesan peas. (So so so yummy!)
  • Orange cranberry sauce.
I haven't decided on dessert, but I'm thinking gluten free apple crisp (almond flour, pecans and a bit of brown sugar for the crisp) baked in mini pumpkins, and something pumpkin-y, maybe a pumpkin custard or pumpkin mousse...

Cook the peas however you like (I like to barely cook them ). Take half of the peas, throw them in a food processor with mascarpone cheese, a couple cloves of garlic, a shallot, parm salt and pepper and my secret ingredient a half tbsp of anchovy paste. Process until creamy and mix into the whole peas. Garnish with snipped chives.

Our supper is fairly traditional, but instead of making lots of veggie sides I like to make soup & salad. I usually make curried squash soup with corn & red peppers and spinach cranberry salad with almonds.
I am going to try the mascarpone peas, sounds yummy!!

Mom usually does Thanksgiving for everybody (ie. herself, my stepdad, my godmother, me, dh, my brother, my sister, both sibling's spouses/SOs, and all our kids...plus my stepbrother sometimes). This year, she can't, so we'll have dinner for just our immediate family. We'll probably do all the same things, though - just in smaller quantities:

Turkey
Ham
Stuffing
Roast potatoes, including some sweet potatoes
Carrot and turnip (might skip this as my immediate family mostly dislikes it)
Brussels sprouts
Mashed potatoes (might skip, as we also have the next one)
Potato casserole (dh's grandma's recipe - basically, potatoes mashed with sour cream and cream cheese, then baked)
Cranberry sauce

Pecan pie
Pumpkin pie
Whipped cream.

Yum. I'm hungry already.

Over the years we have added dishes but never retire any. Thanksgiving dinner include:

Turkey with gravy
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoes with apples and walnuts
corn souffle
carrots with horseradish
green bean casserole
rolls
raw cranberry relish
green salad with pears

Desserts include:

pumpkin pie
mince pie
lemon squares
gingerbread with whipped cream
pecan tarts
and whatever else my mom decides to bake

All dishes except the turkey and gravy are vegetarian (lacto-ovo). All the desserts with the exception of the mince pie are homemade, including the whipped cream. Everyone cooks and brings one or more of the dishes.

mmmm ...
how do you make the green bean casserole?
Pretty traditional....

Mulled Apple Cider (in the slow cooker, on all day)

Turkey
Stuffing (sausage meat, boxed stuffing plus extra spices)
Gravy
Cranberry Sauce (homemade from fresh berries)
Mashed potatoes
Turnip (mashed or casserole - got one the size of a bowling ball from our CSA)
Brussel sprouts (sauteed with bacon bits - got a whole stalk from our CSA)
We also have carrots, parsnips and squash from our CSA but I think that's enough veg for 5 people for one meal....
Buns (my mom is bringing)
Pumpkin Pie (my mom is bringing)

I'll warn you, it contains cream of mushroom soup.

3/4 cup of milk
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 16 oz can green beans
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 1/3 cup french friend onions

In 1 1/2 quart casserole, mix all ingredients, except 2/3 cup onions.

Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees

Top with reserved onions and bake 5 more minutes until onions are golden.

If anyone can alter the recipe and get the soup out, I'd like to try it. This is the old Campbell's Soup recipe that came out the 50's (at least. We've always had it at Thanksgiving and I was born in 1952). It looks like I halved the recipe way back when. Here's the Campbell's website:

I love Thanksgiving, too. It's lucky ours is earlier because there wouldn't be much on offer at a Canadian farmer's market in November!
I kind of like the routine of always making the same thing because people will tell me they're looking forward to whatever it is.
At Thanksgiving, no matter what else I'm making, I'll make an apple-cranberry crisp from Taunton's Fine Cooking. The recipe is online and it is FABULOUS. My BIL once ate THREE helpings!
