Pampers are EVIL (or perhaps it's me!)

I wanted to share my first experience with sposies with you folks... and perhaps you have some advice? After getting a sposie from a friend, because I had forgotten to bring my cloth diapers with me, I somehow ended up throwing it in the washing machine along with my cloth diapers. When the cycle ended, I found this jelly like substance ALL OVER THE LAUNDRY, and the pampers appeared to be still intact, and absolutely huge . I hope my washing machine will still work after this.

Does anyone know what the stuff that is absorbent is actually made of? Is it toxic?

How stupid is that?

The absorbent gel used in disposable diapers is sodium polyacrylate (SAP), and companies such as Seventh Generation use it in their diapers too (they just don't use the chlorine that some more mainstream companies use).

Here is some information about SAP from Seventh Generation's website.

It will neither kill you nor destroy your machine ... just brush off whatever of it you can into the trash and run the load again. Minus sposies.

This overall all the stuff is "harmless" ever seen that fake snow stuff that you add water to to make more? Its the same thing.. Still you don't want baby injesting the stuff obviously as that can be dangerous. In general no sposie belongs in a washer (I've done it a few times) its icky messy and beyong annoying but overall harmless.

Yuck!

Imagine that stuff all over your baby's genitals and you'll see why I switched to cloth.

Yeah...Pampers are pretty evil. It's stuff like this that's the reason why I'm not willing to use disposables even on vacation or when the washing machine breaks down. "You expect me to put THAT STUFF on my baby's genitals, then seal it up in plastic? Um, NO."

I was somewhat soothed by the link to the 7th generation site that claims the SAP isn't actually poisonous...but not soothed enough to ever actually use the things!

I used sposies with both of my kids and I've never seen the jelly on the baby. I think you would have to leave a diaper unchanged for an awfully long time for that to happen.

Every single time I've put ds in a disposable overnight there have been gel crystals on him in the morning. I don't think that it is unusual to leave a diaper on overnight without a change.
The only time I ever had that happen was with a diaper that just needed to be changed sooner ... it was an overnight issue with my son once, but at the time I was accustomed to changing cloth diapers in the night anyway so changing him when he woke to nurse wasn't a big deal, and eventually we just bumped him up a size ... for body size he didn't really need it and it meant the tabs were overlapping a bit in front when it was closed, but for bladder size he definitely needed it. (Which also means he's now been wearing the same size diapers from seven months old until over two years. )

Maybe it depends on the kid's pee because it happened with DD each and every time she wore a sposie. And we normally use cloth diapers, and we change after EVERY pee even when she was in sposies (when we went camping and had no access to a washing machine). I was ever so happy to find Tushies, they don't use the gel.

we use sposies and i find they only gel like that if you leave it on too long or if you are using a size that is too small. My kids break out from somthing I did with cloth. I mean burned their bottoms, red and blistery.

I think it depends on your kid's pee AND the brand, actually. Huggies and Luvs both gave both of my kids gel beads on them which freaked me out, so I switched to Pampers, which didn't bead up on either of them. But I have friends who Pampers beaded up on them but Huggies didn't.

Well I was using the right size and it happened with both Pampers and Huggies. I didn't try any other brands. A sposie worn overnight would also have her awake with a stuffed nose in the morning. I tested at home and with cloth, no stuffed nose, with sposie, stuffed nose. No stuffed nose with Tushies either.

I used them for a short period of time and I've never seen that happen. But I used the swaddlers type. I usually use them when on vacation because cloth takes up a lot of room.

I sposied at night after exhausting all cloth options and we CD for long car trips or vaccations with out access to laundry ect the gel was never an issue even over night.. Well it was once but that was with a very cheep poorly constructed diaper. We couldn't do tushies or 7th generation even cause DD racted to them but did fine with Huggies or Luvs.

In case of my heavy-wetter, too long was a nap (about 2 hours). It didn't matter the brand or the size, after a nap he had that nasty stuff all over him. Switching to cloth was more appealing then waking him in the middle of a nap for a diaper change.
