Birthing big babies

I gave birth to my 12 lb 6.5 oz baby boy on Monday morning with no drugs. It hurt like mad but it can be done! Just wanted to share in case there are others out there who feel like they are going to have a big baby and are worried about the birth.

WOW!! Way to go!! That is so cool! Did you have a home or hospital birth? Were you expecting such a large baby? Congrats!!

Thanks ladies! I had him at a stand alone birth center. My 3 year old DS was 10 lbs 1 oz and I thought that was huge and I knew this one wasn't gonna be small but I didn't think he'd be 12 lbs. With DS1 I had a typical hospital birth with an induction and an epi which resulted in an episiotomy and a 4th degree tear and I refuse to do that again. I only had a first or second degree tear this time and the recovery has been much easier.

I had a 10 pound boy at home (he's a teenager now!) and it was a great birth. Only problem is all the baby clothes they don't get to wear because the clothes are too small!

Good for you!! It is definitely possible.

Wow, way to go mama! My son was 10lbs 7oz and I thought that was big... I couldn't imagine 12+lbs!! Congrats to you!

Wow! I've had 10lb4 and 11lb1 boys. I am due in a few weeks and have worried all pregnancy that this one would be in the 12s. Its a girl, so maybe not....
I second that on the clothes! I am skipping straight to 3-6 month clothes!

How near your due date were you?

My 1st (the "small" one) was 10 days past, but the bigger one was 3 days before. I am doing everything in my power to get this one out ASAP (well as soon as 37-38 weeks gets here.

Thats great about the tearing repairing quickly! Oh, how long was he, head circumference etc? Sorry, I am very interested!

He was born at exactly 41 weeks. 22.5 inches long and 14.5" head. I tried many natural induction techniques to get him to come and finally dtd sent me into labor. He was born very chunky,no chicken legs here and he is in 3-6 month clothes! Good luck!

Wow! Congrats mama!

Im on track for a 10lber so its great to hear that its possible to have the 'big ones' without a c-section.. my OB has been really pushing/concerned about him being SO big (his head measure 37 weeks at 31 weeks). ..
I don't consider babies big unless they are over 10 pounds.

Awesome! Congrats! My last two were 10 lbs and my former ob was scaring the crap out of me about having an even bigger babe this time around. If you can do 12 + lbs- I shouldn't worry! Thanks for sharing (and alleviating some of my irrational fears!)

Thanks mama! It's nice to know that if I do have another boy bigger than my 10+lber ds that it's possible for him to have a smaller head!! (ds's was 15"). I know fat sqishes, it was his darn head that hurt like HE**!!

I'm 32 weeks and my DS head is currently 33cm/12in around according to the u/s. Im afraid he's going to come out looking like an alien at this point.

I wouldn't put ANY stock into u/s measurements especially this late in the game. I don't know if you've ever gotten to watch the screen while they are doing measurements but they can move that line or circle (in the case of measuring the head) even a hair and it can make a BIG difference in the result. Plus I don't believe their heads grow very fast at the end. At 29 weeks with ds they told me his head was measuring dead on to the day, well either his head had a major growth spurt during the end or they were way off....I think I am going to go with the u/s being off.

I don't get this! My Dh/I were talking about how being off a mm in the measurement changed the age by 1-2 or even 3 weeks. . . I just dont understand how any Doctor can consider an u/s so accurate..
