Wetnursing on "Dollhouse" last night!

So it's a sci-fi show with plenty of twists and turns so I won't bother explaining everything, but in the epi last night, Echo (Eliza Dushku's character) is programmed to be a mother for an infant who's mother died. The people at the Dollhouse induce lactation in her, and she breastfeeds the baby onscreen within the first ten minutes of the show! Granted, the experienced eye can tell the baby isn't latched on; the little guy's face is stuffed in her armpit, lol!

Neat!

I am watching it now on my DVR.

How funny when the father mixes the bottle of formula, smells it, makes a face, and then says "It smells like fish!"

Yeah my husband was yelling check it out!!!! It was great to see nursing period, much less wet nursing. Woohoo.

Did anyone else notice the bottle he was using is the same kind that comes with the Medela breast pump?

And I thought wetnursing was illegal...

I heard a rumor that Formula companies were all vying for the slot where the dad mixes up the bottle and they show the can of formula, but they denied all of them and just turned a can around so no name showed! Don't know how true it is, but they definatetly don't show a name on the can!

My husband was cheering as well, and laughing VERY hard about the "smells like fish" comment, which we had to agree with.

Huh? I've never heard of that.

LOL because working for the Dollhouse is so very legal to begin with.

I noticed it, too. Makes sense if Echo's character was breastfeeding.

Take this how you will, but in the episode that aired last night, one of the protagonists made a disparaging comment about bottlefeeding. I'm not going to say what it was because it's prolly against the UA, and I'm not saying it's good or bad...it does make me curious about what Joss Whedon's feelings are about breastfeeding. Or maybe it's one of the writers. Who knows.

I always thought it smelled like cat food. I suppose a lot of the cat food I've smelled is made from fish, though.

IMO, it tastes even worse than it smells.

What was the disparaging comment? Either I didn't catch it or I don't remember it.

I'll PM it to you. Just being extra cautious; I don't want to offend someone by posting it.

My favorite line of the episode was when Topher says, "maybe I shouldn't have induced lactation, maybe that was taking it too far". I could totally see Joss Weadon's humor in this in stating that he himself was pushing the envelope and doing it on purpose.

Very cool episode. As an OT side note, I love that Weadon never hurts children in his shows.

Thanks for that! Very interesting.

What I really liked about the entire concept was how strongly they were suggesting that inducing lactation affected her on a fundamental level, that THIS was what made her react differently to this, made her incapable of letting go of this identity. I think there are some fascinating and powerful underpinnings to that idea.
