Co-Sleeping on a dippy mattress?

Hello,
We have been cosleeping since baby boy was born 2 weeks ago. It's a little annoying though because our sucky mattress has been worn out to where DH and I slide toward each other in the middle. It makes it to where we can't really lay DS on his back because he'll roll toward the middle of the bed! Usually we have to prop him up on his side against me. It's been fine, but I'd like to have a flat surface to work with. Anyone else have to work with a less than ideal surface?

You could try putting a piece of plywood between your mattresses. I remember my mom doing this to get more life out of an older mattress.

If the mattress is so saggy that it causes you guys to roll towards each other, I'd be really nervous about co-sleeping in it with an infant. It's really not a safe situation. Is it any better if you put the mattress directly on the floor? Is there any way you can afford to buy a new mattress?

ours sucks too. DD slept on my chest or belly or in my arms for the first couple of months. later i started propping her on her side with two small and very firm pillows. Sleep positioners would work too - esp the ones that are small fabric/foam.

I went through the same thing, and it was awful. We have a cheapie $100 Wallyworld futon downstairs, and I eventually ended up leaving the family bed with my son to co-sleep on it. It was uncomfortable for me, but still seemed better since it was a flat surface. I eventually returned upstairs with my son, as my husband was upset about our absence from the family bed. I had a sore back pretty consistently from this for about a year! Now I'm pregnant again and I've put my foot down this time that we need to get a new mattress before baby #2 comes along, as I plan on co-sleeping and will not go through this again. I wish I could offer advice on how to make it better without having to go through the expense of buying a new mattress, but I never figured out a way. I tried every way I could conceive of evening out the bed with blankets, boards, bolsters, etc. but nothing seemed to help.
