October Allergy Observations (Chat thread) - Page 9

Hey guys... I'm back. For the moment at least. Tension is running high around here, and I really need to be "around" some people who get it, kwim? Plus, I really miss you guys.

I have about a million threads to catch up on before I lose them in my CP... but I'll be back later to catch everyone up on us.

JR- I can't believe your issues at the hospital. I would be SOOOOO pissed that they were trying to pressure him into drinking that crap, AFTER he said that he had to talk to you first. That is completely unacceptable, even without the medical bracelet and notes on his chart. They do not have the right to undermine the parents, ever ever ever.

Before last year, I probably would have just shrugged my shoulders and said "Meh. That's just the dominant society." This year, I'm slightly more sensitive.
Holy cow. I, being also pretty sensitive lately, might have gotten mad and told him about how hell is a made up place to scare him into behaving "correctly." And how... no, never mind. Don't want to start offending a bunch of people my first day back.

Has anyone looked into metabolic typing? I can start a new thread if anyone is interested in chatting. I'm reading this book right now after hearing this guy talk in one of the Hawthorne lectures.

And, I have been using the higher doses of Vit A with my LO the past few days for this virus he's been working through. How long did you do high doses for that time? My ND said I could give him 50,000 IUs for three days.
You asked about soaking nuts, right? I just threw some salt into the water and let it soak, nothing fancy.

I gave 8mo DS about 80,000 IU per day for 2 days, from my reading that's a long way off from inducing toxicity. I don't think 50,000 IU for 3 days is unreasonable, and if you feel like you need a few more days, I'd do it (your kids are older/bigger than he was/is). But I'm a pill-popper.

I would probably call him and tell him I changed my mind after doing some research for myself. IMO, it's his fault though. He chose to leave out that the Genova one tested for additional markers. If he didn't want the additional work, he should have given all the information you needed to make an informed decision.
Well, that's the thing though, is that I don't know if the DiagnosTechs tests for the additional inflammation markers or not. I tried looking on their website and could not find an exact list of what they do test for, only general info.

My doctor said they were "comparable" but that the Genova one was a lot more expensive. So, I chose the DiagnosTechs one initially. I just *hate* going back to the doctor with questions. I don't know why I am like this. I just feel like I am being this annoying patient. I am like this with ALL male doctors.

CS, hey, welcome back! I don't know anything about metabolic typing though.

Okay, good to know. I really think the A has helped him work through this.

So castrate him. Envision him in a dress and high heels if that's what it takes, but remember HE works for YOU.

Hey CS!! Welcome back! I swear I was JUST today going to ask where you have been! I disappeared myself for a bit over the summer. Hope things are going well. I have heard about metabolic typing but know nothing about it.

Hi cs!!

I was actually just going back and looking at metabolic typing again last night - we did a hair test for dd, and one of her ratios showed an extreme protein type metabolism. How's that book you're reading?

I'm reading www.thyroidbook.com right now, per my mom's request, and it's interesting. Anyone happen to know how it compares to other thyroid advice around here? I haven't done much thyroid-specific reading... it breaks down hypothyroidism into 22 different profiles, and gives advice specific to each.

Thanks! That is exactly what I need to do! You are too too funny.

I remember now my last homeopath MD wanted me to do a metabolic typing diet, and gave me a handout on it. I'll have to go and dig it up. I remember reading it and thinking that I pretty much thought I already had myself figured out and knew what I needed. I know my body responds to protein and fat best.

I should look into that more, and I really need to look into the thyroid thing too,

Also, I called Genova and they said that the CDSA 2.0, additionally tests for 4 inflammation markers, which I think would be good to know.

I hate to call my doctor back and be the time-consuming patient. I always stress over that.

Anyone have an opinion? He already sent me the DiagnosTechs kit, should I just go with that one?
If I was spending that much money, I'd want to know what I was getting. Think about it. Mine is $149. Not sure how much yours is. But say it's $200-250. If you were buying a TV, you'd look at one brand vs. the other to see what you were getting, right? And if the doctor has the information, then that's who you need to go to. If you could get it off the internet, that would be helpful, but not everyone's websites are helpful. You could also ask him about the PayAssured program (it's not available for all insurance though (it says Aetna, Humana, Principal, and Tufts, as well as Medicare, Medicaid, Champus and Tricare, are not included).

ETA: And I vote for key lime squares, Kathy.
DD1 believes in God. But DH doesn't (that happened last year). I originally tried to skirt the issue by talking about faith, but it was a "Whatever. Answer the question, Mom" kind of attitude. And if you're child says that to you, you can talk to him about tolerance. And that all beliefs/religions are different, and no one is necessarily more right than another. Another teaching moment, brought to you by... (quick think of a non-allergenic food to plug).

And there are two problems with the key lime squares... (1) I'm out of coconut milk and don't have time to go to the Asian market today... actually I could go right now... and (2) I've searched everywhere for the recipe and can't find it. WAH!!

Just got back from the osteopath. It feels like I was run over by a truck, and 5 minutes after I got in the car to come home, I was suddenly exhausted and wanted a nap.

The book is pretty good- interesting stuff. I really like the underlying premise- that not all foods/supplements are good for all people- everyone's body chemistry is different. In a nutshell, this theory says that foods are NOT acid or alkaline for everyone. The same food can be acidifying for one person, and alkalining (is that a word?) for another. What really surprised me is that the same thing goes for supps.

They have a questionnaire in the book (which is just one part of the actual testing, but it can give you a general idea which category you fall into) which shows me as a Group II person- ideal diet would be high in proteins and fats, low in carbs. But for supplements, I should take things like calcium but NOT mag.

I'm thinking if we ever have the money for it, I might actually try to find a practitioner and get tested. Because I'm just throwing supps into myself left and right, and I can't see any progress in myself. Or change for that matter.

Shannon- which hair test showed a metabolic type?

here's the thread, and Tanya's post about the ratios. It's the Calcium:Phosphorus ratio for her that's way low, and it's interesting you're talking about calcium - that showed up really low on her test, and is half of the ratio. And it's what I already had pegged as really important for her, and one that I keep trying to supp. We've been really bad about supps for her lately, and she's craving carbs like crazy as a result

Does the book go into the chemistry behind the types? Have you seen this online book?

My nose is running, my throat hurts and I'm doubling my vitamin C for the day. I probably should've doubled it when the 2 nurslings got sick.

Ooh- thanks! I totally forgot about that ratio. I just pulled our tests- I'm in the slightly fast, and DD is in the fast zone. I wonder if that would throw us into the fast oxider group??

He talks about the 4 metabolic types-
  • those whose metabolic systems are dominated by the oxidative system:
    • slow oxidizers - alkaline blood (group I)
    • fast oxidizers - acid blood (group II)
  • dominated by the autonomic system:
    • sympathetics - acid blood (group I)
    • parasympathetics - alkaline blood (group II)
I don't have my brain completely wrapped around it all yet... but basically he's trying to get the blood to the ideal pH, and depending on which type you are, different things will get you there.

Hi CS!

I have a fast moving cold assaulting my body today. Go C! Go C! Go C!

I met with a local allergy mama yesterday! Wow, face to face, letting our kids play. Her LO is 9 months. T had fun destroying the house. Gaw, she's such a whirlwind! Anyhoo, I let Emily keep my crystal until Monday. She's so excited to have a direction to go... the crystal is REALLY responsive to her, and she picked it right up- running around the house testing everything... just like I did when I first got hooked (and still do when I need answers).

Love you guys. Ben is leaving today until Thanksgiving...
