I'm trying out my 5-day-old in the Maya Wrap, but his head feels like it's dangling and I have to keep my arm under him to be comfortable. I'm putting his head away from the rings, btw. Should I try head on the ring side? Or do you have to hold on to a newborn in the sling anyway?

I carry that way too (away from rings)...I think you need to tighten a bit more snug. But, I also suggest doing upright, since it's easier to get a good and safe position with a brand new baby in upright than in cradle.
But, here's a picture of the semi reclined position. I'm using a short wrap, but it's the same concept.

i always did a tummy-to-tummy upright carry with a newborn, much more secure IMO and i like to be able to have their head right under my chin so i can hear baby breathing.
either way, though make sure you tighten the top rail - just pulling on the middle of the tail won't usually work, you often need to adjust the rails independently to get a really good fit. the videos on zolowear.com are great, might want to take a look at those too

I usually used tummy-to-tummy with mine too.
But if you are putting them cradle, you still start tummy to tummy. Then, you slide his feet down and to one side. By the time you are done, he should be lying in the cradle position diagonally across the width of the sling with his head right next to the top or "outside" rail (edge) of the sling and his feet toward the bottom.
If you've done that, you should be able to tighten the top edge of the sling to support his head, no problem.
