Getting a serger....so, how can it help my diaper making?

Next week I'm getting my first serger. I'm excited. That said, I don't know a lot about sergers.

So, I'm wondering, what steps of my diaper making process can I replace with serging and how?

I currently use the Kwik-Sew AIO pattern (it's roughly similar to the VB pattern in terms of steps). Here's the rundown of what I currently do with my standard machine:

1. layer the insert pieces and stitch together using a ZigZag stitch

2. Straight stitch the insert to wrong side of lining.

3. Stitch the lining to the PUL (right sides together) and leaving an opening at the front waist for turning.

4. Tack my back and side elastic in place.

5. Turn the diaper right side out and top stitch between elastics.

6. Stitch around the elastics with zipper foot (making casing)

7. Attach front velcro strip and two velcro pieces to the front and sides.

So, I'm assuming I can replace step 1 with serging. But, from what I've read, I can't skip the turning because if I just serge around the edge (instead of stitching and turning and top stitching), I'll run the risk of leaks, is that right? What if I had FOE?

I mostly use my serger for sewing together doublers/boosters. You could use it to finish the edges of your AIOs and then attach FOE, but it could be tricky over the elasticized areas. Good luck with your sewing!

I am not familiar with your pattern, or using PUL, but I can share what I use my serger for. I have used the serger to make AIOs with fleece and flannel. I use it for the edges of my fitted diapers, for my doublers/soakers, and for my fleece covers. I have also used it on the edges of mama pads using flannel and fleece. I think you could very well use it on the edges of your dipes if you use FOE. I haven't personally used FOE. I have binded things though, after serging, and it works well. I can also use my serger to do a hem stitch, where the machine rolls your hem and does the overlock stitches. So, if you are doing gussets or pocket diapers, it may be helpful there. I am currently designing a pocket night time pull up, and not sure if I will just use my hem foot on my sewing machine, or my serger for this. The gussets I put in my diapers, I did use my hem foot on my sewing machine, as serger is still in the shop.

I LOVE my serger. This is the longest I have ever used a sewing machine for diapers. But, I am getting really close to needing my serger to finish these. Kymberli
