Gift for a 5 yo girl?

Thread Starter
DD is going to a birthday playdate for a 5 yo girl tomorrow. They've asked that if we want to bring a gift, please bring one under $10, and they'll do a gift exchange. I love the idea of keeping things a bit more modest

So, does anyone have ideas for under $10 gifts?

ETA: All the guests will be girls about 5 yo, so that's our target audience.

Do any specific ones come to mind? My daughter is still in preschool - the other girls are in kindergarten and I'm not sure if there's a significant difference in the interests between the two groups. Thank you!

make a tutu!

http://tutusbowsandmore.com/pages/tutuinstructions.htm

I've made a ton of these. always a huge hit! very inexpensive to make but expensive to buy, so they have a great showy factor to them when opened. every little girl I've seen open hers has wanted to put it on immediately

the link above is just one of many out there. the key is to use "tulle on a spool" because some directions call for cutting tulle into strips (which is a HUGE pain).

if you don't sew at all, you can use an elastic headband for the waistband.

I've found the best color assortment for tulle on a spool at Hobby Lobby. JoAnns has just a few colors.

I recommend using the slipknot (rather than the regular knot shown on that tutorial). The ones Ive done with regular knots get too tight over time and the band shows through.

Also, you can "wrap" the waistband with tulle instead of ribbon if you want. I recommend wrapping with either one or the other or they don't look great over time (waistband starts showing through).

XOXO

The Mercy Watson books are cute and age-appropriate with beautiful pictures.

Oh, Fairy Houses is another good bet:

I LOVE books, but I wouldn't necessarily go that route for the gift exchange. If you do go with books, I'd do something like Fancy Nancy.

I think the idea of making a tutu or cape is fantastic though. Girls that age love dress up generally. My girls' grammy makes capes from satin - with a snap closure. They are fairly simple and ALWAYS played with by that demographic at our house.

If you aren't anti-current toys, that age girl usually likes Littlest Pet Shop. A simple version of the "color it yourself" poster that comes with pens. Playdough in a set with fun molds that make it into food, etc. Color Wonder (pens that only write on that paper so safe near clothes or carpet) especially with the princess theme if that doesn't offend you. My six year old also loves Webkinz - both to play with and to use the online "make your pet its own room".

My dd3 (6 y.o.) LOVES to build with blocks - traditional wooden or fancy magnatiles or any kind. She also likes to put little animal figures in the "houses" she builds. But blocks and animal figurines are going to be far out of your budget.

Mine is also super into art, but I wouldn't go with "normal" crayons, paper, etc. If you go art, get smelly pens or blowpens or something different than what they probably already have at home.

If you take your dd to the store, she could show you a zillion things. If she likes it, the other kids probably will too. I just wouldn't go too educational. We do that as moms for our kids, but it is the vegie (maybe one they like but still). For a birthday gift/exchange, I'd go with something that will put a smile on the opening child's face.

Every kid is different. My 6 year old was SUPER psyched about her math workbook at Xmas (she ASKED for one) but most kids wouldn't. She was also happy about her books on planets and sharks (also asked for by her) but again not something most young girls would jump for joy over.
