Talk to me About Diaper Pails

So, I've been CDind for almost 1 month. I don't use a diaper pail, all my dirties go into a plastic laundry bin. What exactly would I need a diaper pail for? How would it differ from my laundry bin? What kinds of systems do you use? What about wet pail and dry pail? How do you use a wet bag, and why?

I have a plastic trashcan with pop up lid we use as a diaper pail. We use the "dry pail" method-I shake out the poop in the toilet (once they're on solids), then throw them in the pail until I wash them. I don't know many parents who use the wet pail method,...and I don't really know of any reason why you would need to.

I use the wetbag when we're out at about for wet and dirty diapers.

You may want to switch to something with a lid once the baby is mobile,...that's not something you want curious little ones getting into.

Although, if the diapers are away from where little hands can get to them, there are advantages to having something open. In particular, the diapers tend to dry out and not stink at all. We only had a nasty smell in our pail when we kept the lid on it.

As your babe gets older you'll be using less diapers per day and can do less frequent washes. I would think, even if the diapers dry in the laundry bin, you would have a constant urine smell near it.

We had a fancy plastic diaper pail with a lid and a fancy air filter/deoderizer, and it was awful--just horrifically smelly. After a few weeks of suffering, we switched to a plain wicker basket and the smell was just gone. There was no smell at all, unless you literally stuck your head down in there right next to the diapers, because they could breathe and dry, rather than sit & fester. Of course, we lived in a very dry climate at the time. It might be different in a humid environment (like the one we're in now).

I like using regular landry hampers lined with a CD pail liner. THey allow for enough air to prevent constan smell but still keep overall courious toddlers away. Like these http://www.amazon.com/RUBBERMAID-265...724192&sr=1-28 This or simple flip top kitchen trash that allow enough air to escape.

You'd think that but nope quite the opposite.

With dd I had a diaper pail my mom ordered from me for Nicki's Diapers, lined with an XL Bummis tote. The swinging lid broke, but I didn't really need it anyway; with washing every other day, we didn't have an odor problem. I washed the liner along with the diapers.

I just now remembered that I'm not sure if we threw the diaper pail away when dd day trained or if I cleaned it and put it in the shed. The other day I bought a Rubbermaid trash can for this baby and I haven't put a liner in it yet, but I'm assuming it will work the same way, although if I can find dd's old pail in the shed (I guess it must be pregnancy brain fog that I can't remember if it's there or not) I may go back to using it, and use the new trash can for something else.

I don't know that using a diaper pail would work any better than using a laundry bin as far as smells go. I just liked having a washable pail liner.

thanks everyone! so, for now, after these ideas, i see that what i'm doing is fine. my laundry bin is open top, and there are holes all over, so i suspect thats why its not stinky. i've also been rinsing the poop off the diapers as they get dirty.

I like having a pail liner so I don't have to wash the bin/can/pail.
