Need Help: Prefolds Leaking

I'm having trouble with my son having blowouts in his prefolds and diaper covers. My son is too big for the smalls, but not yet big enough to fit real good into the mediums yet. I have him in the mediums, but almost every time he poops is leaks out around his legs of the prefold and cover. I fold the prefold into thirds. Is there any other way to fold the prefold so that it fits tighter around his legs? I'd love to stop the blowouts, so any suggestions would be great.

I rarely had blowouts using the jellyroll fold and a snappi. You fold some of the prefold down in front so the rise is shorter, then roll each side in sideways, and fold the diaper up over his front. (You should be able to find pics if you google jellyroll fold) The rolled edges create a gusset around the thighs to keep poop in. You may be able to fit the small covers over this as well, but even if you can't, the leg gussets should keep the poop in.

Do you have some pins or a snappi? Tri-folding doesn't really provide good poop containment, though it is very simple. I'd try a different fold, here's a couple of links that with instructions:
