Anyone else is excited for "Where the Wild Things Are"? - Page 2

I am also interested in hearing opinions of if you took your young kids and if there is anything that might frighten or disturb them. (the PG rating makes me wonder)

DS just turned 4 and we would like to take him to the IMAX but I am slightly worried the anything a bit too scary combined with the IMAX screen may not go over well with him.

I just got home and...meh.

My six-year-old cried because he was sad. There were also some pretty frightening parts. If I had a do over, I wouldn't take him. Actually, if I had a do over, I would wait until it came out on DVD. Definitely NOT a kid movie. More like an adult movie about a childhood book. They aged Max up to 9, but he was still doing all the 4-year-old-ish behaviors from the book. It was a little disturbing. That kid didn't need a wolf suit, he needed a therapist. Pretty much all the relationships in the movie were dysfunctional in some way. The only positive was it was a real "moms are important" kind of movie.

Oh, I was also disappointed in the score. I thought I would really like it, but again... meh.

thanks for confirming what i suspected annettemarie.

dh and i are thinking of going to see it but we were pretty sure based on the trailer that it would be too intense for our little ones (5 1/2 and 3 1/2).

I love that part too. I used to read this book with preschoolers and they always noticed that there was a piece of cake with his dinner too. I think that tiny detail really speaks to children that anger can be "over".

I wasn't too keen on seeing the movie until I read this review here. Now I do want to see it for sure, but I'll probably wait until DVD due to time and $$.

I've been reading the reviews to see if I just missed something, but I'm just facing up to the fact that I just didn't care for it. I found it kind of boring. To be honest, I don't think I was prepared to like it. This is one of my absolute favorite children's books, and one of the things I love about it is its simplicity and sparseness. To muck up Sendak's story with almost two hours of dialogue and forced action seemed almost like a sacrilege to me. And I heard a bad review on NPR that morning. I may have just been predisposed to criticize.

Ds (also 6) and I were both crying at the end of the movie.

It was a pretty intense film with a lot of complicated, intense adult themes.

I loved it! So did my 7 year old. My 2 year old enjoyed a lot of it, too, but he couldn't sit for the whole thing. We're a family of wild things, so the anger/ rages, tantrums, raw emotion, etc. may be easier for us. My 7 year old has autism, and Max reminded me of him in some ways. I think he related to the character as well.
I loved the symbolism in the movie. I loved the honesty of feeling in it. I loved the feel of the movie. I cry when I read the book, I've cried during the trailers, and I cried in the theater. And I hugged my kids, my wild things.
I think the adult themes and symbolism could be easily missed by younger kids. And it's not a good movie for people who are sensitive to wild acting-out. But kids like mine- who create lots of noise, make people-piles, slam into each other, feel things strongly and express those feelings with abandon - I think they'll enjoy this movie.

I wanted to like it. I liked what I heard in the previews. I think there was one song I liked in the movie and the rest was, as the Village Voice review wrote, "insipid indie rock."

My girls are really excited for this movie. they are 16 and 11 so I don't think they are the targeted audience. We'll probably have to wait for dvd though.
