Liberal Quakers (Friends)

For several years, I've been told I should consider myself a Liberal Friend. By tests, friends, family, the universe it seems. I'm having a bit of a spiritual crisis this year and feel like now is the time to investigate this. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out more about this practice? Books, etc.? Is anyone else here a Liberal Quaker?

I attended a UU church a few years ago, but now I live over 90 minutes from any sort of UU or Friends meetings (2+ hours for Friends meetings) which is obviously a lot and not do-able right now. I wish I had community!

check the links at this bookstore for introductions to Quakerism. your library may have some of these volumes.

there also is intro reading material online at this website, which is an organization that supports several yearly meetings (yearly meetings are groupings of local congregations)

each yearly meeting usually has a Faith & Practice--a book of guidelines and a non-creedal version of "here are things we believe". you might find that very helpful. here is one from Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

you sound sure there is no meeting near you. just in case, have you checked here?

i have been worshiping with Friends for 10 years, and if you want to PM me feel free.

Thank you. I will check all those out. I just requested one of the books on the lists from my library.

I checked that site for ones near me and there is one monthly meeting 1.5-2 hours away I might be able to check out sometime. Thanks!

I don't self identify as a Friend, but my husband has for a decade or more.(And I agree with him on *most* things, so maybe I'm a friend and don't know it ) We've rarely been able to attend a meeting, because they are so rare. But welcome to the club! I can't think of any right now, but google books on General Quaker history as well. The early writers were incredibly wordy, but understanding the Liberal Christian roots of the movement helped me put a lot in perspective.
