Can you help me think this through?

Hi more experienced knitters!

DD has requested the Fae Folk Hat for her winter hat this year (so cute, yay!)
and today we went to the LYS to pick out some yarn.

We came home with some Noro Silk Garden Light, which is a DK weight, and another DK solid.

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn on size 6 and 8 circs. Talking with the LYS owner, he suggested more of a heavy worsted/aran weight if I was going to use those size needles. DD was really liking the Noro dk weight, so I was thinking maybe I'd just use smaller needles and knit to the next size up in the pattern hoping it would come out smaller, her size.

Fooling around with the yarn this afternoon, the two yarns actually look really pretty knit up together, one strand of each. This makes together kind of a bulky weight yarn.

How do I go about changing the pattern to use this? The pattern has shaping to it- meaning I have to place markers at different places and M1L, SSN etc... so it isn't a matter of just reducing over all number of stiches.

If I used smaller needles with chunky yarn, would that sort of equal out to the size it would be if I was using the needles called for and worsted, ya think? I've been told I knit kind of tight if that helps any.

I think DD is at the end of the size range for the medium hat I think, should I just knit it to the pattern with the needles called for and my slightly heavier yarn and hope it's only a little bigger but still fits?

Did any of this make any sense, lol??

what gauge are you getting, and what's the gauge for hte original pattern? You can work out your numbers based onthose two things, you'll just have to do some math and figure out the inch measurements between the shaping in the original and then extrapolate that sizing onto your new gauge.

thankyou for your help!

I've actually decided to take the noro and turn it into a lacy scarf for myself- I think its much better suited to that- so think and thin! Plus, I never end up making stuff for myself, so this will be nice.

Today DD and I dyed some wool yarn with kool-aid for her hat. It's hanging now to dry, and she is so, so excited! She's been playing 'knitting a hat' all day, lol. I can't wait to get started on it.

The lazy way of doing it, next time the question arises is: find your gauge, multiply it by the number of inches in your FO item to find your magic number and then knit the pattern size that has that number of stitches as a cast on. Generally, however, I find that knitting DK on 4mm needles a size larger is a recipe for success.

ahh... thankyou- I'll have to remember that. I'm so terrible at math that reworking the pattern seemed really scary to me... but that make sense.

thanks again!
