I really want/need one for this baby it will be winter and I live in WNY and it will be windy and cold and I would rather have him on me than in a baby seat! I have a otsbh a BH and a kozy. I would be wearing him at least once a day outside and I have no clue what kind of coat to get. will a matrernity coat work? I will need one that can be both money is super super super tight so it cannot be more than at the very very very most $80 so i am stuck! I tried to google babywearing coats and I got nothing! Please help! it is already getting cold here and I have nothing!

I used a Moby Wrap and wore some larger coats over the both of use when my DD was an infant last winter. I mostly wore my partner's jackets and coats; he has a windblock fleece jacket and a down coat that fit well over both of us. I sometimes, when it wasn't as cold, would insert a blanket into the wrap after I had placed my daughter. This worked pretty well.

Mostly I found coats that fit at the end of my pregnancy worked great for wearing my daughter in after she was born. If you need to purchase a coat, maybe try going to a second hand or consignment store. Sometimes you can find some great buys for cheap.

I never bought any maternity coats, but I imagine they would work too.

I am looking into these as well. I have found kindercoats. They are about $140 which is more then you wanted to spend, but they have peekouts for front AND back carry which would extend the length of use. Since as the baby gets older, you switch them to back carries. They are not totally ugly, and have great reviews. I also like the poncho ideas. I am looking on some FSOT boards, but finding only smalls. Good luck!

I don't have any idea where I saw it, but I know it was a link from MDC--somebody has instructions on how you can alter a regular winter coat to wear baby underneath. Even if you aren't crafty yourself, finding a tailor to fix up a thrift store coat might be cheaper than $140.

I made mine.

If you're doing a front carry though just a large oversize jacket would work well. Men's jackets are usually made roomier & are cheaper than specialty maternity jackets.

I found this link to make a coat yourself: http://www.sedlmeiers.net/photos/Bab...tructions.html

Haven't tried it yet, but I plan to.

How old is your baby? For a really little baby, just wearing them underneath your largeish coat (anything that fits in late pregnancy will be fine) works well. I had my baby last February in Alaska and did this for that first winter.

I am not crafty at all mama thanks for the link though

this bean is not due for about 5 weeks yet so i have time but not to much as I have no coat that fits me right now and the weather is chilly but not to bad it is in the high 40's and 50's so a light coat is okay for not but not for long!

I splurged and bought a Kindercoat too...I got the deluxe.

I love it because it's actually three coats in one, and when you're not babywearing, its' a regular coat. Sounds impossible I know, but it's Wonderful!

Here's the link.

it was sooo worth it.

We have a kindercoat too. I wouldn't trade it for anything!!! It keeps the both of us super warm!

I take my husband's jackets when we're going out for a walk with babe in the sling - maybe that would work for you.

I have a Kindercoat, and we like that one a lot for the really cold, windy weather, although I wasn't very happy with the quality control on it - loose threads and some small bits have popped off - nothing serious, though. And then there is this one I got off Etsy from a really sweet mama - her prices are really reasonable, and she makes them all herself. Here's my son and I the first time we wore it -

CottonBabies.com has the AISKA poncho on sale for $50 (originally $160). I have used it during the winter in DC and WNC and it works great. I'm actually on my second one because I ruined the first one by putting it in the dryer and it shrank to half the size, so I gave it to a shorter friend of mine. But I loved it so much that I just bought another one.

Oh, that Kindercoat looks awesome. I wish it wasn't so much $$. But I walk to school with the kids every day (and pick them up too), and I'll need some good way to keep the babe warm. She doesn't like her head covered, so zipping her up totally inside a big coat wouldn't work, and if I leave her head out, my neck/chest will get cold.

Hi all...I'm new here.

finances are a bit tight so there was NO way i could buy a kindercoat or mamajacket for the colder weather, so i decided to have a go at making one myself!

action pics will follow tomorrow when ruben is awake and can model, i have just tried it with a big teddy so far but it seems OK! here's what i used and roughly how i did it - sorry if it makes no sense to you at all... i'm rubbish at explaining! will probably be easier to understand once i post some pics tomorrow!

I USED:

- 2 very cheap fleece jumpers (mine were £3 each from primark)
one in a size to fit me (men's size S - they didn't have ladies fleece jumpers) and one in the largest size they had (men's size XXL) just to get extra fabric.

- 3 open-ended zips to match colour of jumper
(mine were 22" long, but they should be long enough to go from the bottom hem of the jumper up to where your baby's head usually comes. They all need to be the same length!)

- about 1 metre of round elastic

- 4 plastic toggle thingys to go on the end of the elastic for adjustability

- a bit of sew on hook-and-loop

- sewing thread

- sewing machine

AND HERE'S HOW I DID IT:

first i needed to turn the jumper into a jacket with zips down BOTH sides... so i cut the jumper that was my size in half straight down the middle and sewed on two zips, one on the front and one on the back. now i had a jacket that looked pretty normal apart from it also had a zip running down the back, and the zips did not reach all the way to the top.

next i made the insert that will cover ruben when i'm wearing him. i took the XXL size jumper and cut the whole front of the body off it to get a rectangle that was the same height as the zip. then i took the top bit of one sleeve and turned it into a pixy style hood: i cut a rectangle the same width as the body piece, and about 15cm tall and stitched it onto the body. i then folded the whole piece lengthwise and stitched along the top edge - this made the hood. i then hemmed the hood.

now i had a rectangle with a hood attached to it... next i stitched the third zip onto the long edges of this rectangle, one part on each side, aligned with the bottom. i then took some ribbon and stitched it on where the hood met the body - this formed a "case" for the elastic.

I put elastic through this "case" i'd just made and finished off the ends with the toggles, now i could adjust the width of the neck hole for the baby. then i put another piece of elastic through the bottom part (which conveniently was already hemmed!) which allows me to adjust the insert at the bottom and make it nice and snug to keep the cold out.

almost done! now i had three pieces: two half jackets and one insert. these can all be zipped together in different ways to make either:

- a jacket with the insert on the front
- a jacket with the insert on the back
- a jacket without the insert (and a spare zip running down your back! lol - might make people stare at me if i'm wearing it "sans baby" but who cares...)

the last bit i needed to do was sort out closures for the top bit of the jacket (front and back) as the zip didn't go all the way up. I used more of the arm of the XXL jumper and made two flaps that fasten with velcro.

and TA-DAAAA...! it's complete! it took me just under 2 hours to do, and only cost me about £12!

(proud of myself now!)
