PLEASE HELP - cloth diapering issues!

Hi everyone,

I am having some major problems with my son's cloth diapers and was hoping I might find some answers here.

Here are the details:

-My son is 10.5 months old, he's been in cloth since about 4 months. I've always used pocket diapers on him. I use mostly Happy Heinys and Baby Kangas with microfibre inserts (though I do use some cotton inserts as well).
-Around 9 months, he started getting some really bad diaper rashes. I wasn't sure if it was from teething, so we kept using cloth. We then had to go on a trip for 4 days and I didn't want to haul along cloth diapers so we put him in disposables for that time. The rash quickly cleared up.
-After some advice and suggestions from mama friends, I tried doing multiple hot water washes/rinses to make sure the diapers had no detergent build-up in them. It didn't help. The rash came back.
-It was then suggested to me that since we have an HE washer, there might not be enough water in the machine, so I added wet towels to "trick" the washer into adding more water. It didn't seem to do anything.
-I then tried stripping the diapers with blue Dawn and doing multiple hot rinses after. Still no improvement - the rash came back even worse.
-The last thing I have tried is adding vinegar to the rinse cycle and it still has not helped.
-I am using Claudia's Choices detergent, but have used Tide Free a couple times, on the suggestions of others.

I am getting so frustrated!! My son has been in disposables for nearly a month now - with brief attempts going back into cloth all resulting in a nasty diaper rash returning.

I am thinking he may have developed an allergy to fleece. It seems to be the only explanation I can think of.

Does anyone have any ideas they can pass along or share with me? I am pretty much at my wit's end. I really want to keep my son in cloth, yet I just can't deal with this rash and all the problems we've been having with his diapers! I am so disappointed that I've spent nearly $800 on diapers I've used for less than 6 months. Please help! I really appreciate any advice you mamas might have!

Thanks in advance!

If you think it might be the fleece can you try using the pocket diapers like covers with your inserts against his skin instead of inside the pocket?

That's an idea, but I wouldn't put the microfiber next to his skin. It's really absorbant, so that by itself could really dry him out.

cotton next to the skin is fine. Does he react to any other polyester? (Does he have fleece jammies or anything?)

I'll have to brain storm a little more. I'll come back if I have more ideas.

Could there be yeast or something living in the dipes? You might be able to cautiously try bleach or boiling to kill any buggies...

buy a few pfs maybe and a couple covers (or use the pockets as covers)just to see if he gets rashy in them. if not maybe sell the pockets and do the pfs and covers.

I successfully used pocket diapers (wonderoos) from around 7 months till just over 2 years then a bad illiness brought on several bad rounds of yeast and then that warped into staph After that it did something to her skin and even totALLY buying brand new diapers shes suddenly reacted to the stay dry polly inners and we from then on HAD to have pure cotton only.

Thanks for the suggestions To answer the questions asked, he doesn't really have anything else polyester, so I don't know if it's that fabric in general he reacts to.

I've tried putting the microfibre inserts next to his skin but it makes his skin way too dried out! I am going to see if I can borrow some cotton inserts from a friend and try them for a couple days to see if that material is better for him.

I'm really hesitant to use bleach as I don't want to accidentally wreck any of my other clothing (lol, I've done it before in the past so I don't keep bleach in the house at all). I guess if I knew it might work, I might reconsider...

Thanks again for the replies. I guess it's back to more trial and error

I second buying a few prefolds and trying those with the pockets as covers. I would see if there is improvement with that. Plus, prefolds are way cheap and really handy to have around.

on bleach we regularly added bleach to our wash after the staph round and never saw a diaper rash again (unless she got citrus and reacted to that) it also did no damage except lighten my prefolds and made a few kissaluv seconds "colored" fitted white again (after a while). I was actually having issues with leaky covers (bummi and literaps) and those were totally restored after adding bleach. I used the clorox ultimate thats formulated to be gentle on fabrics its actually not designed for disinfecting but well it totally worked for us. I'd put about a table spoon worth in with a full load and always ran the extra rinse cycle.

Here's my suggestion after 6 years of CDing
Use Tide. Tide Original powder. Don't use Tide Free.
I'd get the one for HE macines in your case.
Cold rinse. Wash hot. Rinse. Rinse Again.

That is all!

On another diapering board I participate it when this topic was brought up hundreds of mamas rang in and said that they used Tide Original powder without any issues w/ stink, rashes, etc. etc. etc.

Dont be afraid to try bleach, just dont use a lot, start small, like a 1/4 cup or less. A little goes a long way especially in a HE machine. I have used it on pockets, inserts, prefolds and covers, and never ruined a thing.

Possibly try a different detergent, switching to Planet seemed to help when I couldnt figure out my dd's rash. BUt I couldnt be sure that wiped the rashes out completely since we switched to sposies not long after due to 1st tri nausea... I am planning to start with Planet for this new baby though. I'm sincerely hoping I dont battle this again with baby due in 2 weeks!

Good luck, I know it sucks.
