Tuesday morning I awoke feeling strange, but I didn't pay much attention to it. I figured it was "just one of those mornings." After getting DD1 off to preschool, I came back home and napped for a bit with DH before going to my hair appointment at 9 am. Almost as soon as I got to my hair appointment, I started noticing I was having contractions. I sat through my appointment without ever mentioning it to the lady that does my hair. Then I began to notice the contractions were coming on stronger and more regular. It was getting to the point I could no longer just simply ignore them. I hurriedly met DH for a minute to give him DD1's booster seat so he could pick her up from preschool at 11 am while I ran to the store to get the stuff for dinner. I still wasn't mentioning what was going on. After I got home from the grocery store, I told my mom and DH I was having contractions. But what was so odd was it felt like Bri was going crazy in there! I called my OB's office just in case, even though I wasn't really concerned. The nurse told me to just watch and see what happened and if I felt like I needed to go to the hospital then by all means go. After calling my OB's office, I felt a small gush. I went to the bathroom to discover I was bleeding. I took a shower to try to relax and see if the contractions were real or not. After the shower, the blood became a brighter red and the contractions made it known they weren't slowing down. I knew at that point Bri was ready.
My mom and DH hurriedly got ready. I waited patiently while both of them took their showers and got their belongings together. (I was the only one that had my hospital bag packed.) After about 45 minutes, everyone was finally ready to hit the road.
I timed the contractions from home to the hospital. The contractions were consistently three to five minutes apart. They began at the top of my uterus, worked through my hips and back and seemed to peak at my pubic bone. The contractions were crazily intense. I've never experienced anything like it.
After a car ride lasting an hour and a half, we finally arrived at the hospital. Since I had pre-registered the evening before, things were much simpler. It only took a second for us to be registered and back to labor and delivery.
Upon my arrival at labor and delivery, the nurse took us back and asked me to pee in a cup and change into a gown. After I changed, she immediately hooked me up to the fetal monitor. The contractions were showing on the monitor at regular intervals. She then did a cervical check. I had dialated from 1 cm to 2.5 cm in the last 24 hours. The bleeding had picked up as well. The nurse excused herself and called my OB.
Just a few minutes later the nurse came back in a panic with lab staff. She informed me my OB was admitting me for an emergency c-section at 2:30 pm CST. The lab staff immediately started prepping me for surgery. They first gave me an injection to try to stop the contractions, but it didn't completely work. After that, they began trying to stick me for an IV and to do bloodwork. During this time it was found my platelette count was 92, which is slightly low. Due to my history of pre-eclampsia coupled with the low platelette count, they did bloodwork for that as well. It was unsure for awhile if I would be allowed to stay awake for the c-section or not, but luckily for me, the antesthiaologist's cut off for spinal blocks was a platelette count of 90, not the standard 100, so I was able to stay awake for her delivery. It seemed as though the bloodwork results were taking forever and I was becoming increasingly anxious.
I was finally taken back to the OR at 3 pm CST. The anesthesiaologist explained the spinal block and how it would work. He also explained the side effects I may experience. I was then directed to scoot over to the OR table from the bed I was transferred in, which was very awkward to say the least. I began feeling faint and hot flashy from the Regalan they put in my IV. The nurse held me and I broke down. I was overwhelmed to say the least. I was not expecting such a rollercoaster of emotions.
The c-section officially began at 3:30 pm CST with DH by my side. Brianna Madison was delivered at 3:38 pm CST. The nursery nurse brought Bri around so that I could see her as well. She was covered in vernix and screaming at the top of her lungs. The nurse dried her off and swaddled her. She then placed her on my chest for a couple minutes while they were closing my incision up so I could see her before she left for the nursery. Afterwards, DH walked with Bri in his arms to the nursery. She was given a bath and then fingerprinted for the birth certificate and things. They also weighed and measured her. She weighed 6 pounds, 10.2 ounces and measured 20 inches long.
After the c-section was over, I was taken back to my room to await Bri. Once she was brought to my room, I had DH place her bassinet next to my bed. He then took her out and handed her off to me so I could breastfeed her. She latched on the first time without any problem and has continued to do so ever since. She's just absolutely amazing.
We were released from the hospital this morning at 11 am. We're getting comfortable at home now and I must say it's quite different having three children under five, but it's not near as bad as what I thought it would be. I'm so in love with all three of them.
I did bruise pretty badly with this c-section for some reason and I'm hoping over the next few days it eases up so I can be more involved with all three girls more. My OB sent me home with a prescription for Percocet and Darvocet, but I'm trying my best to take as little as possible. I wasn't expecting the bruising and things with this c-section, but the fact I went into labor on my own and ended up with an emergency c-section are probably the main reasons I did bruise. All in all, I am very thankful though I chose to undergo the c-section. During the c-section it was found my uterine incision is thin, which could've easily resulted in a uterine rupture.
Lastly, here are a couple pics of Brianna. I'll post more later after I get them on here. Enjoy!
