Education / Teaching Info. Request

I am in school finishing up my BA with plans of entering teaching hopefully in a private school but public if it's in a good district is also okay.

Do you know of any forums geared toward education or teaching? Are there any places online I should be looking into?

The path to go into public teaching seems straight forward but the path toward private is a little foggy.... and I could use support in both directions.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about private school where you are, but I know that the whole "go straight for the masters" thing you mentioned isn't the norm around here. Private schools vary greatly in their quality, so I would imagine that your experience as a teacher there would vary greatly as well. Why are you more interested in private than public?

For general teaching topics, teachers.net has an OK forum. I used it a lot when I was moving from NY to NJ and wanted to know what teaching in NJ was like, but that was several years ago, so I can't vouch for it now.

What do you want to teach? That will help you find forums as well. I'm an English teacher, so I really get a lot of good information from NCTE, which is my professional organization. I'm also a member of the English Companion Ning, which is a phenomenal online community of English teachers.

What sort of teaching background are you getting from your BA? If you're not doing a teacher preparation program as part of your BA, to get state certification, you'll need to do extra steps to teach. You could do a masters program that will be mostly ed credits and will do your student teaching. You could also do an alternative certification program like Teach for America or the NYC Teaching Fellows (which is how I became a teacher). In the Teaching Fellows, I did an intensive summer of pre-service and then went into the classroom. I did my MSEd concurrently to my two years of service in an inner-city classroom. It was a tremendous, life-changing experience, by the way. Anyway, your options will depend on the state you live in. If you're comfortable posting your location, there may be people here who are more familiar with your region.

Thanks for responding Stacey!

Why are you more interested in private than public? The main reasons I am leaning toward private are class size and school atmosphere.... more freedom in teaching style and literature choices, discounted tuition for my daughter would be nice perks as well.

Overall as a solo mama I need to make sure I can balance both my work responsibilities as well as my family responsibilities. While I LOVE English and love teaching and working with youth I also want a manageable grading load....

What do you want to teach? I plan on teaching English so the info. you shared is great!!!

I am doing a teacher preparation program as part of my BA but have not started student teaching yet... it just seems when you get a Masters in Ed you do slightly more student teaching than I am doing as part of my BA program.

I think the private and public differences you're envisioning would really depend on the school. I know that in some districts around here, the pedagogy is really progressive, and at my sister's Quaker school, some teachers are really progressive while others are quite old-fashioned. Anyway, I think it's a great idea to get your state certification since you can, so that then you have options.

Also, when you're thinking of grading load, consider middle school. Personally, I couldn't handle the age group, but I considered for a minute applying for the recently open 8th grade position in my district because 60 students sounded so nice compared to 120!

As far as masters degrees, I don't see that around here. The teachers I know who've done BA and MAT or MSEd have all had the same amount of student teaching.

If you're interested, since you're thinking of going into English, I could put you in touch with my colleague who's a single mom (girls are almost four and 6) and teaches 9th and 10th grade with me. She could talk to you about the pitfalls!

I would LOVE that!!! I will PM you with my info. I also really like English Companion Ning so thanks for sharing that lead with me. Already I have taken a great deal of notes there.
