My 5 mo just started telling me she has to go!

I never would have believed it, but it's true!

Last night, DH wore her down to sleep in the sling and at 9 took her out to put her PJ's on and put her nighttime diaper on. He asked me if he should potty her and I said no, she probably doesn't have to go. So as I'm putting her PJ's on, she's going "puh..puh..puh" and blowing over and over again. I think she's just messing around, but finally I'm like "all right you want to go potty?" and I put her on the potty and she took a big ol' pee!!!

First thing in the morning she did it again. "puh..puh..puh" and I put her on the pot and she peed.

I was telling my friend R about it and she reported that dd had done the same yesterday when we were out shopping right before she took a poop in her diaper.

And then this afternoon we were hanging out in the grass, I'd just taken her out of the sling but forgot to potty her, and she starts going "puh..puh...puh" so I pick her up and, sure enough, she pees! And her diaper was dry!

We use the "pssss" as a cue for peeing but also "poopoopooopoopoop" for pooping and that's the one she seems to have picked up. I highly recommend it. It's obviously a sound pretty easy to imitate for her. It's the first "babble" she's got that apparently means something.

Won't she love it when she gets older and I tell her her first word was "poop".

That is very cool!!!!! My LO's first word (first vocalization that meant something) was potty also!

OMG that's awesome!!

Just today, DD (4mo) has started "blowing raspberries" as a sign of discontent, and I wondered if she might be attempting to imitate my "psssssss" sound. She did not pee everytime she blew raspberries, but did some of the times! I grunt for poop and sometimes I think she grunts to tell me.

Aha, ds is doing that too! But I have never thought that they might be related...can't wait to try tomorrow!!!

This is great to hear! Mine is also 5 mos and he just started saying, "mah" or "mih" or "meh" when he wants milk. We are hoping potty is his next word! We were using signs, but kind of dropped off in favor of talk.

We stopped cuing a long time ago. Getting naked and sitting on the potty seems to be his cue. We talk about what's going on with words. We use pootie and tinkle so that the words are different enough from each other. We also say potty all the time.

He tells us he has to go by fussing, grunting, or losing focus on what he's doing (pulling on and off breast or zoning out while playing).

He slept for an 8 hour stretch last night (it's usually 3-5), then ate and stayed asleep for another hour. He was dry that entire time! When he got up, he peed in the potty and then 10 minutes later had a wet diaper! It's funny how quickly he goes in the morning.

Update

Just wanted to update this thread. That weekend when my dd was 5 mo and told me (verbally) whenever she had to go was pretty unique. It really did happen, but it only lasted a weekend weird.

She's now 7.5 mo and we're dealing with all the changes that happen down at that end now that she's starting solid foods. She used to go every morning, now she goes maybe every 2-3 days, and we deal with constipation. No more bananas I guess. As she gets more used to solid food, we'll see if we can get back on track with the EC.

I've also been carrying her less (because she's _heavy_ and because we're in the house more due to winter) and that makes me less able to predict when she'll have to go.

It _was_ a cool weekend though.

Great you updated this :-)

I understand your issues, my 14 mo old is also very heavy, we only started at 3 mo and we are nowhere near perfection yet....
also due to the cold, less wearing, etc.

I do thinkk he blows raspberries and hides somewhere to poop so I try to catch him in the act, only he will not sit down to poo??????? Only standing up.....

And he grabs his diaper or lookes down, but afterwards, not beforehand...

in the wrap, he is much more clearer

LOL, I just read my response above. My son said the "muh" word for about 3 weeks, and hasn't said it since! He also doesn't say any words that mean potty. He does still use the potty very well without verbal cues, though. He's almost 8 months old and not crawling yet. We'll see what happens when he starts moving!

My little DS was an EC pro genius from like 6 weeks until 4 months. We had obvious cues, and sometimes no misses for days. Sometimes I even wanted a miss to test out new trainers! Once we went on an 8 hour road trip and he stayed dry the entire time!

Suddenly around 4-5 months old, he was all over the place! Sometimes we wouldn't have catches for days, then a few days later he would seem like a grad, then it was miss fest again. It was really a roller coaster ride until he graduated. Definitely fun, interesting, and challenging!

In our house...Bananas=the baby stopper upper. Cut down on them and the poop will magically return to "normal" (whatever that is).
