hurry: need some book recommendations fast please!

Thread Starter
my dsd is turning 10 this weekend and my husband bought her a book called "It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health", by Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley. I like this book but feel it's a bit advanced for her. She's been pretty sheltered - neither her father or mother have talked to her at all about sex or her body. I haven't researched the books but remember the book, "the teenage body book" from when i was young. I'm thinking i'd like her to have a book that first just talks about her body and the beginnings of sexuality - not necessarily drawings of people in bed having sex together. She is not yet in puberty and shows very little interest in things sexual. Can i get some book recommendations??? need to get a different book today -

Thanks

Nicol

Honestly, I think the book you've got is the best one for her age. Harris and Emberley have one for somewhat younger kids called It's So Amazing, which is excellent, but it doesn't get into the nitty-gritty of puberty as much because it's for kids who are a few years away from it.

I don't think there's anything in It's Perfectly Normal that should be traumatic for a 10-year-old, even one whose parents haven't done much talking with about sex yet. I'd step back and trust her father's judgment.

I agree with Thalia. She should be fine with It's Perfectly Normal.

I agree that It's Perfectly Normal is a good book for a 10yo. Please also keep in mind that a 10yo (I'm assuming she's in 4th grade?) is also going to be exposed to information about bodies and sex from her friends. It's probably a good idea to make sure she has accurate information now, rather than assuming or hoping that she hasn't been exposed to those topics yet.

I do think that The Care and Keeping of You is also a good book about bodies, puberty, etc. Although my girls read it at a younger age, it would be okay for a 10yo.
