Anyone see that the video of Anna Dugger giving birth? - Page 2

What a great birth! Daddy caught the baby! Was their bradley instructor a doula and a midwife? She was really prepared for the birth with all her supplies! I'm so glad they aired that!

The whole thing seemed kind of fishy to me until I saw all the equipment the “doula” had, I then came to the conclusion it must have been a planned homebirth. Looks like to me the “doula” was really a midwife. I can’t for the life of me at the moment remember where they live but perhaps is one of those states where it’s illegal or tricky for midwives to practice (I’m only really familiar with the rules in Texas) or maybe the surprise “doula” assisted homebirth is how TLC thought it would best come across to a mainstream audience.
From all the interviews with the two of them, I just can’t see them having an unassisted homebirth on the fly. They, Josh especially, seem very organized, focused and prepared. Seems to me TLC spun the comment by Josh about the couple hours of discussion they had about homebirth to look like it took place during Anna’s labor. I’d venture to say those discussion happened well before. I also wonder if their doctor was really out of town. Of course anyone who’s never had, or even contemplated, a homebirth probably wouldn’t even know the difference regarding the timing of the conversation. I think TLC managed to pull it off really well. Props to Josh and Anna for shining a very positive light on homebirth.

I was pretty sure midwifery was legal in Arkansas.

ETA: The more I think about it the more I believe it probably was a spur of the moment thing, although maybe something they HAD considered. Just Jim Bob asking if they were at the hospital and telling them to pray on it. With as Christian as they are, I really don't see them lying for the sake of a show. With as modest as they are, I could see Anna and Josh also being worried about getting a male doctor at the hospital...

Ahh, good info to know. Then I’m still betting the doula is either really a midwife… or there's always the possibility the midwife didn't want to be filmed. Then there’s the third possibility that I’m just a conspiracy theorist, I’ve been accused of that before.

I post my reply my conspiracy theories and then you have a great point I didn’t even consider. Well any way you shake it, it was an awesome decision and TLC covered it very well.

I was soo happy for her! it was such a beautifully simple birth, and TLC actually did one right this time!

Unless they went out and bought a hanging scale and hemostats and chux for their last-minute UC, I'd bet this was a mw attended homebirth.
well it was NOT an unasissted birth, lol... UC's don't have a lay midwife.

But it was a great birth!!!!!! I loved how truthful and honest it was. I am sure they planned to homebirth... they probably swirled it in there heads since they found out their doc would be out of town.

So peaceful and sweet.

It was so beautiful!

Josh did say that he called the bradly instructor to see if she would STILL be their doula if they decided to have a homebirth. Obviously it was at least discussed before hand. Either way, it was a lovely lovely birth and Anna did GREAT!

Wonderful!

Yup, saw it! It was fantastic. I am already writing a positive letter to TLC. No unnecessary drama at all--unlike most episodes of their "Baby Story" series! Yeah!

I was pleasantly surprised at how the show was edited. It seemed very real and not all panicky. The look at Anna's face during labor and it was totally different than the look on most of the mom's faces that in labor and are shown on TLC. Then again, most of the moms on TLC birth shows are medicated in the hospital. I was surprised at how it seemed to be a last minute home birth and wondered where they were going to find a midwife at such short notice. Then I thought it was an unassisted home birth, until reading the "doula" is probably also a midwife but maybe the real midwife didn't want to be on camera and they creatively filmed around her/edited her out? I don't know, but I'm glad TLC presented in a positive manner and not like they were a bunch of crazies.

Yeah, I do have a question...what do most 'doulas' carry in their bags. Because they did have equipment to cut the cord and also had one of those scales.

I stayed up late and watched the birth, and I'm very happy for their family.

Well, I don't know about everyone, but most of the large families I know have those things on hand anyways. I do, I have an entire bag of hemostats, a sling baby scale, pads, and numerous other "first aide" stuff that I routinely keep on hand.

I don't usually watch this show, but I did so I could see thye birth. It was great and Anna did awesome!
I was thinking the same thing as some of the pp's, that the doula was really a midwife.

I think the doula/Bradley instructor was also a doctor. The office they had the Bradley class had her name on the door as an M.D.

It airs again tomorrow evening,...might be worth watching to see.

ETA: It's airing Thursday night on Discovery Health, not TLC.

I thought it was wonderful and was so excited to see it! DH & I had just come back from a "homebirth info night" at the midwives' so it was great to see! Just beautiful. I believe it was fairly spur of the moment, I think it threw JimBob off when Josh told him they were considering it, there was quite a pause and then "well pray on it"...you could tell he wasn't sure about it but was not passing judgement on their decision.

But do you have an oxygen tank? If you get another chance to see the show, look for it. It wasn't prominent but there was definitely one there.

Sorry for the runaround.

You're welcome to post on the Duggar thread here in Television. However, please keep in mind it's to discuss the television show only, as MDC no longer hosts celebrity gossip/speculation. Please take a moment to read the thread guidelines, found in the first post, before posting.
