Well, I'm actually not sure what a "sterilizer packet" is, but we don't even sterilize the scissors we cut the cord with. We just wait til the placenta's out & the cord's all empty & white. I do put Betadine on the cord end by the baby's belly though, just in case. I'm not worried about them not being sterile since there's no blood at all flowing towards the baby in the cord or anything. I kinda just consider the cord dead at that point.

I love your cord braid. I made a cute blue, green & yellow one this time but I hadn't thought of taking a picture of it. Although I'll be sure to get a close up of it on the baby's belly!

eta: My cord braid is just in a ziploc bag with the pair of sharp (washed, but unsterilized) scissors.

Looks something like this: pouch has paper on bottom for steam to enter and when the color strip turns it's ready. You can put it in a pressure cooker or something like that.

ETA: last time I just soaked my cord tie in rubbing alcohol. I might do that again.

Wow, so you can use a pressure cooker like an autoclave? That's so interesting! I had no idea.

Do you really think it's necessary to sterilize your scissors though? And we don't sterilize the baby's clothes & diapers that rub on the cord end, so would we really need to soak the cord braid?

I'm just askin'. You should do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

To answer your original question, doctors do put cloth towels in & around their instruments when putting them in the autoclave to sterilize, so my guess is that you could put the cord braid in it with the scissors.

I just want to get the scissors as clean as possible before I use them. They're brand new, so I'm not too worried, but I figured if I'm going to sterilize them, I might as well do the cord tie too.
