Why is the color rubbing off?

My dh made a toy for our dd, and dyed parts in food coloring. He says he sealed it with beeswax (though I don't know how well he did that). When our dd chews on it, the food coloring comes off on her clothes, skin, etc. Why is that? Is there any way to fix it? Here is a picture of the toy. Thanks!

Here is a site where the lady tested various types of natural wood dye & paint & food coloring rubbed off: http://www.make-baby-stuff.com/finishes-for-wood.html It just does. I have had great success w/ watercolor paints under beeswax. From what I have seen from other toys, too, unless you do some type of food stain (berries, coffee, etc) or actual paint, it rubs off.

Thanks! We actually used beet juice for the reddish one, and it rubs off too. Oh well.

I like to use shellac under beeswax finishes (for toys and other stuff). The shellac is harder, and is an excellent sealant (often used to seal fire damage or other discoloration before painting). The beeswax would have to be stripped first.
