I've been saving my twin boys worn-out or sentimental woven (i.e., non-knit) clothes since they were infants (they are now 7) for the purposes of making a patchwork quilt for each of them. I think I have enough raw material now and want to start cutting the pieces soon. I'd love some ideas, photos, links, or anything useful someone has to tell me about how they did this. I don't have a lot of free time, so I need something that will come together relatively quickly. Originally I was thinking of a crazy quilt, but that sounds like a lot more work than just piecing squares together. I was thinking about piecing squares into strips and laying them on the diagonal to make it more interesting. Any ideas/advice? TIA!!

I had seen a really cute quilt that had the diagonal idea that you mentioned, but it was more like bricks, instead of squares. Like 2x4 inch finished bricks. You sew them in rows, which get bigger as you lay it out, and then sew that together, and square it up. I think getting bricks out of clothing is a lot easier than squares. Unless you are using dresses, which it sounds like you aren't. I don't remember where I saw that quilt and pattern, maybe even a tutorial, but if I come across it, I will give you the link.
You can do bricks horizontally and vertically as well, but the diagonal was very striking. And, you won't have to worry about quarter square triangles that you would need if you do squares diagonally. Kymberli

I made one and it was super easy. Here is a picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/kraby/4005000739/
I'm sure you can make it look as fancy as you want. This was my first sewing project EVER so it's a little wonky, but I love it and it's warm and squishy and DS loves it too. I just cut out squares from my favorite outfits, and then the random blue squares are from a few of his baby blankets. The back of his quilt is that blue minkee fabric that's so soft. It was really very easy and I had fun doing it. Now that I know more about sewing and quilting I am getting ready to make him a twin-size quilt. The one I made is more of a lap quilt size (but for a toddler, it's perfect!)
