suggestions on how to make large mouse ears?

Hello creative mamas! I'm planning to make my son a Despereaux costume this halloween. The outfit seems easy, but the ears seem a bit daunting. I'm worried that because the ears are so large that they may not stay erect. I bought some fluffy felt that look like the mouse fur for the ears. I plan to attach them to the cap instead of trying to make a headband.

Please offer some suggestions as to how this can be done! Each ear would be about an 8 inch circle (??). I'm hoping to get as close to the animation as possible (ie not a flat circle) Here's an image of Despereaux for your reference; and another. Thank you so much for your ideas!

They will look better if you line the inside with a peach colored felt or fabric. You could sandwich a layer of stiff interfacing between the two layers. Then just fold the top down a little and the bottom up slightly.

I've made these, I think it should be easy enough to attach them to a cap instead of a headband.

I think the key to getting them to stand up is the pleats at the bottom. It took me a while to get that right.

Cut a few circles out of buckram and stitch along the edges. Zig zag over the edges. Use spray adhesive to attach the felt to the buckram on both sides rather than some sort of iron-on infertacing that may flatten the fuzziness of the felt.

My ds's loved Despereaux. They used my eye pencil to draw a nose, whiskers, eyebrows, and mustaches. My youngest wore a diaper cover on his head as a hat and then took my bra from the bathroom and pretended the cups were his ears lol. I don't know how big you want them but you could always try to find the largest bra and use the cups as the padding inside your felt or fabric.
