Slightly Red Tip

I was changing my sons diaper (not circumcised) and I noticed the tip of his penis was a little red. Is that normal? He doesn't seem fussy or anything and pees just fine with no fuss.

This can happen from time to time and could be a lot of things. It's not anything to worry about though. It might be a touch of diaper rash, or it could be irritation from soaps, detergents, shampoos, ect. or it might be that a bit more blood then usual is flowing to that area. See if some diaper free time takes care of it or perhaps a barrier cream.

Thanks!

The tip of the foreskin is like the lips in that they are both very vascular and can be pretty easy to irritate sometimes. Put some barrier cream on like you would for any other diaper rash and it should be fine.

Do you think a fleece liner in the diaper would help with this? I'm thinking of cutting up one of his blankets for a fleece liner at night. ETA: He has a natural fiber cotton cloth diaper.

I dont know anything about cloth diapers so I am no help there but what you could do it is x post this over in diapering.

I DID use fleece liners for my ds (intact) because it wicks the moisture away so well. If he is reacting to urine (acid) then this will help.

Is it the foreskin that is red, or the glans? The foreskin can get a bit red from time to time, it's meant to, as it is protecting the glans/penis from infections. It should clear itself up on its own. If it doesn't, you can use an antibiotic cream on it on the outside 2x/day and add a probiotic to his diet (you can just put it into water and let him sip it, or add it to anything he eats or drinks or just dump some of the powder into his mouth, it'll go down the chute eventually. HTH! Andy

PS - also make sure that you do a vinegar wash after you launder his diapes, it will make sure all the detergent is out of the cloth.

I am assuming you meant tip of the foreskin instead of the glans?

Yes it was the foreskin. I put some diaper cream (California Baby) on it before he went to bed at night and it helped a lot. I then made some fleece liners too and used those last night and he woke up with no red tip. I think it was because he was in a wet diaper all night (he sleeps 12 hours) and it's a natural fiber diaper.

I use baking soda in the wash with his diapers. But I'll add a bit of vinegar too.
