Running is a new thing for me (about last half year). Are the any guidelines for when to stop running during pregnancy. I saw someone post about not adding distance, etc.

Anyway, just wanted to check in with some fellow pg runners and hear how you are all doing. So many people are intimidated by running. It has improved my fitness and weightloss so much!

Hi Annette,
I don't think there are any guidelines that say you HAVE to stop running at any point in your pregnancy. But there will probably come a time as you get bigger and as the ligaments in your pelvis begin to loosen where you will no longer feel comfortable running. Last pregnancy I ran until I was 30 weeks and then I switched over to walking and hiking. Like pp said, listen to your body. It will tell you if you are pushing too hard and when you need to slow down or even when its ok to keep going. Keeping active is so important during pregnancy. It will help you feel better as you get further along, during your labor and even postpartum getting you back into shape.

I have not been a good runner these past few days. I have been soooo tired and nauseated, and am having trouble eating enough as a result. However, I do solemnly swear to run tomorrow, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Mainly because I like it and it makes me a sane person.

I dragged myself onto the treadmill yesterday and managed a nice steady 3 miles and then 20 minutes on the elliptical. HOORAY!! Usually working out perks me up and revives me for an afternoon/evening of fun with my 2 yr old DD, but yesterday I was lucky not to fall asleep in the shower.

Anyone else feeling the same?

I'm so jealous of you guys. I was going to the gym pretty regularly over the summer, but stopped once I got pg. First I was sick with a cold, then I just felt too queasy and exhausted.

I actually had a goal to run a 5k next fall, but I have no idea how that will pan out since I'm pg. I've actually never run, so in addition to needing to get in shape and build up endurance, I actually need to learn to run! The few times on the treadmill have been excruciating on my calves and feet.

Mamja,
I know that this is unsolicited advice, but I highly HIGHLY recommend using a run-walk program to break into the world of running. My husband is a marathoner, triathlete, God's gift to athletics type of guy and I spent three years off and on trying to transition from aerobics and elliptical trainers to running with him. I eventually found Hal Higdon's run-walk program (free on his website) and worked up to running a half marathon.

Hope this helps!

I think coolrunning.com's couch to 5K (C25K) program is pretty good too.

Just ran 1 today. But I did it.

Cold, dark, and rainy, but a great 1.8 today!

Just wondering... Are you ladies running on a treadmill or outside? I have a nice treadmill but it faces a wall with no tv in sight so I think I'd go crazy running on it right now. I usually take my DD in the running stroller on a loop around my neighborhood.

3.5 yesterday, nada today

I run outside. I hate treadmills, I feel like a gerbil.

I always run outside. If I go to the gym I use the elliptic machine. I hate the thumping sound of running on the treadmill.

I have managed two runs this week. I don't know the distance but I was out for approx 40 mins and that was 20 mins running/jogging and 5 mins walking up a steep hill. The rest was warm up and cool down.

Hoping to get one more run in tomorrow morning and then I will be very pleased with my week.

Oh, I wish I could still run. I went out yesterday because I have been feeling so sick -- I thought that exercise would make me feel better. It had been a week since I last ran, MS really hit hard last week. By the time I was two miles in, I was so lightheaded that I thought I would pass out. I had to turn around and walk home

I hate the thought that I will lose all of the positive momentum I have gained over the last year in three short months.

Christina,
I know how frustrating it is to feel like you are 'losing your fitness' if you have to miss workouts after working hard to get to a certain level but if you're not feeling well, you must look after yourself first!

In any case, I have found that even after a short break, my muscles remember and get back into shape relatively quickly.

Hang in there!

I've been meaning to chime in on these threads - I don't run but I do a really hard race-walk (like full steam) for about 45 min a day. No idea on distance since it's all on trails and I don't have a pedometer. I was doing it for months before I got PG and continued up until last week. And then the exhaustion hit like a freight train.

How do you do it? I feel like I can barely get to my desk, let alone exercise. The problem is that when I did it last week it actually made me *more* tired, rather than energized (which is what exercise normally does for me.) It's like I used up all my day's energy in that one walk.

What do you think - should I even manage a slow walk around the block? Or just wait till this exhaustion clears up? I'd love to keep this up b/c I know it will be healthier in the long run but ...

I'm at 11+3 now. Still exhausted and not doing much other than walking.

I used to run regularly and have dne 3 or 4 10k's and a half marathon since DD was born in April '06, BUT i haven't un much since June, because i moved house then and the area i'm in is rougher and it all kind of went out the window.

Would it be safe for me to begin running again in a few weeks (i too am waiting for exhaustion to go). I don't want to get hurt, but equally it isn't like my body wasn't once used to running. I'm not going for anything massive, maybe 5 or 6 miles a week, a couple of little ones and one longer one...? I had plantar faciitis last week and i hadn't even WALKED anywhere. I feel like i'm getting weaker and weaker and i hate it!
